Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>

Opacifier for the production of white enamels.
The parent patent no. 59569 describes a process for the production of white enamels using alkali-containing hydrates as opacifiers. The most favorable alkali content has been found to be around 2 to 70/0. The present invention is based on the finding that the opacity of the opacifier in hydrate form does not depend solely on the alkali content but also on the amount of bound water of hydration. It has been shown that the same coverage can be achieved with a higher alkali content than with a lower alkali content if the content of hydrated water is changed accordingly.
It has been established through experiments that the higher the alkali content, the lower the water of hydration content, and the lower the alkali content, the higher the water hydration content in order to achieve the same coverage.
This results in the basic principle that each hydrate gives the maximum coverage with a different alkali content.
The most favorable alkali content and hydration water content can easily be determined empirically for each opacifier.
