Process for hardening condensation products from phenols and aldehyde.
In Austrian Patent No. 45474 it has been shown that the action of acids, acid-releasing substances and acid salts on condensed, but not yet hardened condensation mixtures of phenols and aldehydes (resoles, cf.
Zeitschrift für angewandte Chemie 1909, page 1601) can significantly accelerate the formation of solid, insoluble and infusible end products (resites). The resites obtained by this process are often dark in color if only the amount of formaldehyde required for resit formation is used.
It has now been found that colorless or light-colored resites are obtained in the aforementioned hardening process if new amounts of formaldehyde are allowed to act on the resols used with acids before or during hardening.
For example, you can add formaldehyde to the hardening agent, which then condenses during hardening with the dye-forming by-products to form colorless or light-colored bodies, or you can use substances which, like chloromethyl alcohol, are able to split into formaldehyde and acid at the same time.
Finally, the action of the formaldehyde and the acid can also take place separately in time, with the formaldehyde treatment naturally having to take place before the acid treatment. for example:

100 parts of a mixture of 1 part of fuming hydrochloric acid with 4 parts of 40 percent formaldehyde are added to the viscous mass thus obtained, with cooling
