It has been found that the light emitted by mercury lamps is on
Insects exerts an extraordinary attraction. If, for example, an ordinary arc lamp with a strength of around 3000 candles and a mercury lamp with a strength of around 1000 candles are hung up close together, it becomes apparent that the insects invariably turn to the mercury lamp despite the greater light intensity of the arc lamp. It is believed. that it is the rays after the violet end of the spectrum and the rays beyond that that exert this attraction on the animals.

According to the invention, such light sources should therefore be used to exterminate insects by means of a light source which serves to attract the animals, the latter then being sucked or pressed by an artificially generated air stream to a collection point, which light sources such effective rays, such as the mercury lamp.

The drawing shows schematically such an arrangement in which a
Mercury lamp 1 is used, which is provided on its lower part with an opaque or colored coating 2, while at the top there is enough space to allow the light required to attract the animals to escape.
