In der Stammpatentschrift Nr. 53018 wurde eine Verbesserung in der Küpenführung bei indigoiden Farbstoffen beschrieben, welche auf der katalytischen Wirkung des Anthrachinons und seiner Derivate beruht.
In der weiteren Verfolgung dieses Erfindungsgegenstandes wurde gefunden, dass an die Stelle des Anthrachinons oder seiner Derivate eine grosse Zahl anderer reduzierbarer und wieder oxydierbarer Körper treten kann. Es wurde ermittelt, dass auch die Chinone der Benzol-und Naphtalinreihe und die Chinone höherer Kohlenwasserstoffe in ähnlicher
