Process for solubilizing insoluble gums, algae, lichens and the like s. w.
As shown in the parent patent, perborates can be used to advantage to solubilize starches.
Further research has shown that the response can be extended to other bodies similar in strength. This applies to the types of rubber, algae and lichens that are insoluble in water and which can very easily be dissolved with small amounts of perborate. These products are important commercial articles and are known in the trade under the names of East Indian rubber, basing rubber, insoluble rubber, etc. Also, the use of perborate relates to tragacanth, agar-agar, caragheen moss, Icelandic moss, etc.
Most of these natural products are used as thickening in printing and finishing. They are left to soak in cold water and then usually boiled under high pressure for 10-12 hours. For one of the substances mentioned above, for agar-agar, attempts have already been made to bring about an increase in solubility by means of ozone.
However, this route is a very expensive one and for those factories which are primarily the consumers of the insoluble gums, namely the textile
EMI1.1
feature. The process applied for, on the other hand, lies entirely within the framework of the normal activity of the textile mills, in that the treatment of the rubbers with liquids poses no difficulties at all, and the use of the borax that remains is not a problem
EMI1.2
Treatment with perborate significantly shortens the cooking time and at the same time results in a significantly more soluble end product.
The perborate is used in such a way that the types of gums are already swollen in a Ptwboratlösung and then boiled with further addition of water until solutions of the desired concentration are obtained. In general, 1% perborate of the weight of the rubber used is sufficient.
