Process for the production of fertilizer from peatland.

It has been found that by the method described below, both the nitrogen present in the moors is made digestible by the plants and the living conditions of the nitrogen-collecting microbes are established, whereby a nitrogen source is opened up for the non-nitrogen-collecting plants.

The method arose and is based on the observation made by the inventor that the excretions of the roots of nitrogen-collecting plants are neutral or that the excretions of the non-nitrogen-collecting plants are only slightly acidic.

The procedure consists in neutralizing the acidic reaction of the moors by intimately mixing the moors with carbonate alkaline soils. Quick lime, which has already been used to improve peatland, probably helps to make the existing nitrogen in the peatland digestible for the plants, but it hinders the beneficial activity of the microbes. The same also applies to the secondary alkali metal phosphates.

The peat mass, which is well mixed with the carbonate of lime, can be used immediately for fertilization, but it is more expedient to dry off most of the water of the peat because of the transport costs.

The following results from stranger tests speak for the activity of the microbes given above. The earth used was a slightly sandy, loamy, loamy soil that had not received any manure for seven years. The bog soil was taken from the Harz high moor.

 Test series.

According to these results, the neutral reaction is conducive to the activity of the microbes, whereas the acidic and alkaline reaction is a hindrance to the activity of the microbes.

For this reason, so-called citrate-soluble silicates can also be used instead of the alkaline earth carbonates, provided they do not contain free quick lime.
