Es wurde weiterhin beobachtet, daß das 'Mangan, wenn es der reduzierenden Behandlung unterworfen war, wirksamer ist, als wenn das Verfahren in oxydierender oder neutraler Atmosphäre durchgeführt wird. Die Untersuchungen haben ergeben, daß eine Oxydation des Mangans nach Möglichkeit vermieden werden soll, wenn im Aufschluß nicht Störungen eintreten sollen. Vor allem hat sich auch gezeigt, daß der Aufschluß selbst in reduzierender Atmosphäre viel rascher vor sich geht und damit größere Ofendurchsätze erzielt werden können. In der reduzierenden Atmosphäre ist es außerdem nötig, bei tieferen Temperaturen zu arbeiten, da die Manganverbindungen der niedrigeren Oxydationsstufen tiefere Erweichungspunkte haben. Für einen Sinteraufschluß könnte dies einen Nachteil bedeuten, der aber durch den schnelleren Reaktionsverlauf bei den niederen Temperaturen ausgeglichen wird. Im Falle von Schmelzverfahren besteht dieser Nachteil jedoch nicht. Es besteht nur der Vorteil der Temperatursenkung in reduzierender Atmosphäre gegenüber dem der oxydierenden Atmosphäre. Ein weiterer Vorteil ist das Vorliegen einer anderen physiologischen Form des Mangans. Die landwirtschaftlichen Versuche haben ergeben, daß auch die hohen Oxydationsstufen des Mangans in der alkalischen Form nach dem Verfahren des Hauptpatentes im Boden durch Einwirkung der Bodenbakterien früher oder später wiederum zu den niedrigwertigeren Oxydationsstufen reduziert werden.
