Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>

Process for the electrolytic generation of hydrogen and oxygen.
In most of the electrolytic processes for generating hydrogen and oxygen gas that work with alkaline liquids, these gases, in particular the oxygen gas, do not leave the apparatus in a pure state. Rather, probably as a result of the strong emulsion of the gases in the liquid, one gas is always contaminated by the other. This is the case both with devices that work without diaphragms and with so-called diaphragm devices.
According to the invention, the degree of purity of the gases can be improved considerably by adding certain additives to the electrolyte. Soap solutions have proven to be particularly effective, especially solutions with strongly emulsifying soaps (Turkish red oil, oxy-fatty acid, resin soap and the like). It is also advantageous to add iron oxide or iron salts with these solutions. For example, the hydrogen content of the oxygen is increased by adding

percent down to 11/2 and further.
PATENT CLAIMS:
1. A method for the electrolytic generation of hydrogen and oxygen using alkaline electrolytes, characterized in that soap or soap-forming substances, preferably strongly emulsifying soap, are added to the electrolyte.
