Instead of hippuric acid, uranic acid (H2 U 04) can also be used as a retardant and good results are achieved with a solution which contains table salt and hydrochloric acid in a mixing ratio of 300 9 salt and 80 cm3 hydrochloric acid per 4.5 1 water. Furthermore, good results are achieved with a solution according to the composition first described above and the addition of 60 cm3 of nitric acid per 4.5 l of solution.
The mixing ratios of the various admixtures of the solution can vary somewhat, the main thing is that the solution is able to give off chlorine when it is heated by the hot steel. When mixing the solution, the hippuric acid should be dissolved in hot water before it is added.
It is of course important that the steel being treated is brought to a uniform temperature through and through, and when it is so heated the effect produced thereby is thoroughly uniform, regardless of the size of the object being treated.
The method is not only applicable to steel, which is rolled or worked in other ways in rails, bars or other shapes, but can also be used on cast steel objects, whereby an increase in tensile strength and ductility is always achieved and can also be used to increase the tensile strength of cast iron. When the method is applied to wrought iron, its ductility is also increased, with its tensile strength being reduced.
