Description

In this process too, with the addition of acid, the solidification can initially only be up to that in the Belgian patent. No. 205459 let go of the plastic intermediate stage mentioned, process this as desired after rapid cooling and then further heat the processed parts. Acid can also act inside Hofz and other substances.

To remove adhering traces of acid, it is advisable to treat the hardened parts with vapors or solutions of alkalis or alkaline substances such as ammonia, soda solution, sodium acetate, if necessary under increased or reduced pressure, before or after any further processing.

German Patent No. 157553 describes a process in which a solid body is deposited from a condensation mixture of phenol and formaldehyde produced by the action of an alkali by adding acid. In contrast to the one obtainable by the present process, however, this is soluble in various solvents such as alcohol, acetone, alkali lye and ammonia and develops formaldehyde by itself or in solution when heated; it therefore differs sharply from the completely insoluble, heat-resistant products of the present process, the formation of which could not be foreseen in this way.

The present process differs from the process of German patent no. 112685 in that the acid is only added after the condensation has been completed, which results in the major technical advantages listed above.

Example: 1000 parts of phenol, 1000 parts of 40 percent formaldehyde and 100 parts of crystallized sodium sulfite are heated until a light yellow, viscous liquid has formed after vigorous boiling. After cooling, 600 parts of wheat starch and 200 parts of 20 percent sulfuric acid are added to this and the whole is heated to 850 ° C. for 1 to 2 hours in suitable molds. After this time, the mass has solidified into a hard, high-gloss, insoluble product which, after thorough washing with 10 percent soda solution, becomes easier. Wise dye, drill, grind and polish.
