Die aus den gebräuchlichen Materialien hergestellten Kerzen brennen mit leuchtender Flamme und wird die Lichtwirkung durch die Abscheidung hell glühender Kohlenstoff teilchen in der Flamme bedingt. Es gelingt nicht durch einen intensiven Luftzutritt, ähnlich wie beim Bunsenbrenner, eine Entleuchtung der Flamme zu erzielen.
Um nun Kerzen herzustellen, welche mit schwach leuchtender Flamme brennen, muss einerseits der Flamme eine bedeutende Menge von Sauerstoff zur vollkommenen Verbrennung der in der Flamme abgeschiedenen Kohlenstoffteilchen zugeführt werden und weiters'mussten Kerzemnaterialien verwendet werden, welche an sich einen geringen Kohlenstofgehalt auf- weisen. andererseits feste chemische Stoffe sind und sich sonst als Kerzenmaterial eignen. Um letztere Eigenschaft zu besitzen, muss der Schmelzpunkt des Materiales etwa zwischen 400 und 1300 liegen, wiihrend ein Siedepunkt bezw. Zersetzungspunkt von ungefähr 200 bis 300 erforderlich
