Process for rendering the sulphurous acid escaping during chemical and metallurgical processes harmless by producing sulfuric acid.
EMI1.1
the well-known fact that an aqueous solution of sulphurous acid slowly turns into sulfuric acid in light. It has been shown that this process is much faster in ultraviolet light, so that technical utilization can be based on it. The procedure is as follows'
EMI1.2
must become. The use of ultraviolet light to unite 802 and 0 to; SOg is known from British patent specification 10881 from 1904.
However, quite apart from that
EMI1.3
Recently (see also Zeitschrift für Elektrochemie No. 33, 1907), a reversible equilibrium has arisen from SO2 and O in ultraviolet light. It goes without saying that, firstly, one
EMI1.4
Light partially back in SO, and 0, and second that a fairly significant concentration of SU2 is needed to get reasonably significant yield of SOa. In addition, the equilibrium is reached very slowly. The present method makes the process completely different and novel by introducing the water.
Water, air and sulphurous acid immediately form sulfuric acid in ultraviolet light, which condenses easily and, because it is not in a reversible equilibrium, allows the sulphurous acid to be converted quantitatively.
As a result, the sulphurous acid can also be removed from very poor mixtures and converted directly into sulfuric acid. The fact that aqueous sulphurous acid is converted into sulfuric acid in the light is known, but it has never been used for the purposes of the present process, any more than the fact that SO2 and O can combine to form 80a in ultraviolet light. The present procedure introduces a new and peculiar combination of these reactions. It could not be concluded from the facts known up to now that the two very slow and incomplete processes combined would result in a rapid and quantitative implementation.
