<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The invention relates to a process for the internal enamelling of hollow vessels, in which the hollow vessel is evacuated, the enamel slip is pulled up into the hollow vessel by means of the vacuum, then left in the hollow vessel and finally brought out at the deepest point out of the hollow vessel.
Another object of the invention is a device for carrying out this method, which has a line which can be connected to the deepest point of the hollow vessel to be enamelled and leads via a valve to a storage container filled with slip and a second line which can be connected to the upper side of the hollow vessel and via a valve has line leading to a vacuum pump.
A method of the type described has become known from AT-PS No. 250127. As the practical evaluation has shown, it has brought significant improvements in the quality of the enamel coating compared to the previously used immersion processes.
From AT-PS No. 288819, a device for applying enamel slip from a storage container to an object to be enamelled has become known, in which the said object is placed in a closable tub. which is connected on the bottom side to the storage container by a suction pipe equipped with a valve and on the cover side to an air suction device. When the slip is applied, air is sucked out of the tub initially with the valve of the suction pipe closed, whereupon enamel slip is sucked into the tub by opening the valve.
This device probably achieves good results when enamelling the outer surface of objects, but is not suitable for the interior enamelling of hollow vessels, in which insertion into a tub to be filled with slip would not have the desired effect, and the system would also have to have uneconomically large dimensions.
Finally, it has become known from DE-OS 2152008 that it was known at the time the concept for the patent application was being designed to try the inner surfaces of hollow bodies, the protective layers of which must be particularly tight and closed because they are exposed to their use after extraordinary chemical-electrolytic reactions to be filled by vacuum suction, then emptied and coated in this way. In this process, the suggestion was also made to pressurize the slurry before emptying.
You want to suck out all air, including the smallest air bubbles, from the pores and crevices before the slip enters, but you forget that the filling liquid, the slip, is always preceded by the instantaneous water vapor caused by the vacuum, i.e. H. that a vacuum can never be completely replaced by a liquid. The resulting water vapor first reduces the vacuum and then condenses again as the pressure rises. Sack spaces, such as pores and small gaps, can therefore never be completely filled with liquid through a vacuum; there is always a small air bubble. Firstly, it is not technically and economically viable to create a relatively large vacuum, and then the vapor pressure and the vacuum decrease.
A complete vacuum is required to completely fill a bag room with liquid.
The object of the invention is to provide measures by means of which an even greater adhesion of the enamel to the inner wall of the hollow vessel can be achieved, and furthermore, imperfections caused by air influences, as can occur in complicated installations, can be largely avoided.
This goal is surprisingly achieved based on a method of the type mentioned at the outset, according to the invention, in that the hollow vessel is pre-evacuated before the enamel slip is pulled up.
This pre-evacuation of the hollow vessel ventilates even very jagged surface pores, narrow gaps, etc., so that when the enamel slip is subsequently pulled up, it is drawn into the most hidden corners without being put under pressure in a disadvantageous manner. This effect cannot be achieved to perfection in the known method.
Furthermore, the pre-evacuation of the hollow vessel causes a considerably greater degassing of the enamel slip, which, due to its processing method in ball mills, is interspersed with small air bubbles. Studies have shown that this bubble structure can be
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
process according to the invention is positively influenced. Smaller and more evenly distributed bubbles appear, which improves the adhesion and the quality of the enamel.
To carry out the method according to the invention, a device of the type mentioned at the beginning is proposed, in which, according to the invention, an intermediate container with a switch for closing the valve interrupting the suction effect in the hollow vessel is provided in the line leading to the vacuum pump.
In the drawing, an embodiment of the device according to the invention is shown schematically.
The device contains a storage container --1-- provided with an agitator (not shown), in which the enamel slip --2-- is applied and brought to the appropriate consistency. The hollow container --7-- to be enamelled is connected to the storage container-l-via a pipe socket --6-- and a valve --4--, from the upper side of which a hose connection --8-- with the interposition of an intake socket - -10-- via an intermediate container --11-- and a valve --13-- leads to a forked line --9--, which via a vacuum battery --15-- with a vacuum pump --16-- connected is.
The valve --4-- is a diaphragm valve, which is the subject of AT-PS No. 365318.
The pipe socket --5-- has a seal --6-- and is adjusted in height by --3-- hydraulically or pneumatically operated lifting cylinders.
A switch --12-- is provided in the intermediate container --11-- for actuating the valve --13--. In addition, the container --11-- is connected to the atmosphere via a line --17-- provided with a valve --14--.
The described device works in the following way:
As soon as the hollow vessel --7-- is brought over the pipe socket --5-- and connected to the suction hose -, the pipe socket --5-- with the diaphragm valve --4-- via the cylinder --3-- its seal --6-- pressed against the hollow vessel --7--. The valve --13-- is opened and releases the connection to the vacuum battery --15-- and to the vacuum pump --16--, whereupon the hollow vessel --7-- via the intake port --8--, the intake hose - -10-- and the intermediate container --11-- is pre-evacuated. The pre-evacuation can be carried out to a vacuum of approximately 53 to 106 mbar, and the control can be carried out via a timer.
After receiving the selected vacuum, the diaphragm valve --4-- opens and the slip flow flows from the container-l-into the hollow vessel --7-- and further into the intermediate container -11-- while the vacuum pump is running. When the slip --2-- has reached the switch --12--, this closes the valve-13-. After a set time, the valve --14-- opens to the outside air, causing the excess slip -2-- to flow out of the hollow vessel back into the tank-l-.
The suction hose-10-- is led to a collecting cup, not shown, whereupon the valve --14-- is pressurized with compressed air, so that the remaining slip --2-- from the container --11-- and the suction hose-10 - flows into the collecting cup. Then the pipe socket --5-- is lowered and the diaphragm valve --4-- is closed. The hollow vessel --7-- is now released and can be brought to the next processing station.
