EMI1.2
To carry out this process, 8 to 25% strength hydrofluoric acid is used, the quantitative ratio between hydrofluoric acid and aluminum hydroxide being 0.95 to 1.05 times the stoichiometric ratio and the temperatures being 60 to over 1000C. Under these working conditions a readily filterable sis is obtained, the aluminum hydroxide is well utilized and a high rate of crystallization of the aluminum fluoride trihydrate is achieved.

Washing processed into a cryolite with a variable cryolite module, which is dependent on the quantitative ratio between the aluminum fluoride present in the mother liquor and the aluminum hydrofluoric acid contained in the mother liquor.
The method according to the invention has the following advantages: better utilization of the fluorine and thus higher yields of aluminum fluoride and cryolite; hydrofluoric acid of lower concentration can be used, which has a favorable effect on both the quality of the end products and the absorption yield of the fluorine-containing gases produced in the phosphate fertilizer industry; Compared to the known methods, it allows a significant simplification of the generation plants for cryolite and it eliminates the problem of wastewater treatment.
PATENT CLAIMS:
1. A process for the production of aluminum fluoride and of cryolite by reacting silicofluoric acid with aluminum oxide or hydroxide in the presence of an excess of silicofluoric acid and subsequent precipitation of the cryolite from the mother liquor, characterized in that in order to achieve extensive utilization of the silicofluoric acid and the Aluminum oxide or
- hydroxyds, the addition of the aluminum oxide or hydroxide to the silicofluoric acid is carried out in two stages at different temperatures, in the first stage 1/3 of the amount of aluminum oxide or aluminum hydroxide required for the reaction and in the second stage the remaining 2 / 3 of the required aluminum oxide or hydroxide is added, then from the resulting mixture containing hydrofluoric acid and aluminum fluoride, the latter is separated off by crystallization, and the hydrofluoric acid in the mother liquor is neutralized with alkali to a pH of 3 to 6.5 with which the cryolite is precipitated.
