It is known that 4-hydroxybenzonitriles dihalogenated in the 3,5-position, especially 3,5-diiodo-4-hydroxybenzonitrile and 3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxybenzonitrile, have herbicidal properties. However, this effect is unsatisfactory against some important weeds, such as Galium (burdock weed) and Alopecurus (black foxtail).
It has now been found that the herbicidal effect of 3,5-diiodo-4-hydroxybenzonitrile and 3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxybenzonitrile against various weeds can be considerably improved if mixed carbonic acid esters of these phenols are used instead of the free phenols. According to the invention, a herbicidal agent is therefore characterized in that, in addition to the customary carriers and / or auxiliary substances, it contains a mixed carbonic acid ester of the general formula as active ingredient
EMI1.1
contains, in which X is a bromine or iodine atom and R is an allyl, tetrahydrofurfuryl, phenyl, benzyl, 2, 2, 2-trichloroethyl or 2-methoxyethylene radical which is optionally substituted by halogen.
The carbonic acid mixed esters corresponding to the above formula are new compounds. They can be produced according to a method not yet belonging to the state of the art, u. by reacting either a phenyl haloformate corresponding to the compound (I) with an alcohol or phenol ROH or a haloformic acid ester containing the radical R with the free phenol corresponding to the compound (I).
The novel compounds provided according to the invention as herbicidal active ingredients, in particular those in which R is an allyl or tetrahydrofurfuryl radical, have good activity against broad-leaved weeds, such as. B. Speedwell (Veronica), chickweed (Stellaria), buckwheat (Fagopyrum), cornflower (Centaurea) and burdock (Galium). Of particular importance is the action against galium, against which 3,5-diiodo-4-hydroxybenzonitrile and 3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxybenzonitrile are hardly effective. The monocot black foxtail (Alopecurus), which is difficult to control, can also be exterminated better with some of the compounds provided according to the invention than with the known compounds mentioned.
An overview of the herbicidal action against various weeds is given in Tables A to E.
The new compounds can be used in the form of solutions, emulsion concentrates, suspension powders, granules or sprays, if necessary after adding diluents. The required application rates are about 0.05 to 2 kg / ha, the use concentrations preferably about 0.001 to about 2%.
The new active ingredients of the formula (I) are processed in the customary manner to give the herbicidal compositions. Such means can e.g. B. have the following composition:

The novel active ingredients provided according to the invention also prove to be compared with known esters of 3,
5-dihalo-4-hydroxybenzonitriles as superior. This is evident from the following comparative tests

<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
: 3, 5-diiodo-4-allyloxycarbonyloxybenzonitrile (according to the invention) C: 3, 5-dibromo-4-tetrahydrofurfuryloxycarbonyloxybenzonitrile (according to the invention)
D: 3,5-Dibromo-4-allyloxycarbonyloxybenzonitrile (according to the invention)
E: 3,5-dibromo-4-n-propoxycarbonyloxybenzonitrile (known)
The comparison compounds B and E are constitutionally particularly close to the corresponding allyl compounds A and D; their action is practically the same as that of the analogous 4-methoxy compounds.
The phytotoxicity was determined on barley as a useful plant, the herbicidal effect on several important weeds, see Sect. following Tables I and II.
