Method and means for regulating plant growth The present invention relates to a method for regulating plant growth and is characterized in that a compound of the formula
EMI0001.0003
in which R denotes the grouping -CH2-CH2- or the cis- or trans-form of -CH = CH-, R1 denotes a substituted lower alkyl radical or an alkyl group having 1 to 7 carbon atoms and X denotes a halogen radical or lower alkyl radical and n is an integer from 1 to 5 with the proviso that when n is 1, X is not in the p-position to the nitrogen atom, and when n is 2, the X radicals are not in the, p-position to one another,
applies to plants.
It also relates to a means for executing the method, which is characterized in that it is a component of the formula
EMI0001.0009
in which R denotes the group -CH, - CH2 or the cis or trans form of -CH = CH-, R1 denotes a substituted lower alkyl radical or an alkyl radical having 1 to 7 carbon atoms, X denotes halogen radicals or lower alkyl radicals and n denotes a whole Number from 1 to 5, with the proviso that when n is 1, X is not in the p-position to the nitrogen atom, and when n is 2, the X radicals are not in the p-position to one another.
None of the various maleamic acids described in the literature have ever been mentioned as having phytocidal activity. In US Pat. No. 2,663,665 it is shown that never other alkyl esters of N-naphthymaleinamic acid have fungicidal activity. However, there is no indication that these compounds are toxic to plants or that they inhibit plant functions or seed germination. In US Pat. No. 2,885,319, esters of maleic anilidic acid are listed as fungitoxic but not phytotoxic and useful for agricultural fungicidal purposes.
In US Pat. No. 2,779,704, esters of various substituted maleic anilidic acids, such as e.g. B. methyl esters of N- (p-chlorophenyl) - maleamic acid and N- (2,5-dichlorophenyl) maleamic acid described, which are suitable as fungicides, but which are not phytotoxic, which is shown by their direct application to plants .
It is known that many amic acids and their derivatives, such as. B. N-naphthylphthalamic acid, are phytotoxic. Mentzer et al. (Bull. Ste. Chim. Biol., Volume 32, 1950, pages 572 to 582) showed that N-naphthylmaleamide and succinic acids had no toxic effect similar to the other amic acids.
It was therefore surprising to find that the new compounds of the formula I had herbicidal activity.
The compounds used in the process according to the invention have the formula:
EMI0001.0026
in R -CH2-CH2- or the cis- or trans-form of -CH = CH- and R1 are lower alkyl radicals or lower alkyl radicals having 1 to 7 carbon atoms, X is halogen or lower alkyl radicals and n is an integer from 1 to 5, with the proviso that when n is 1, X is not in the p-position to the nitrogen atom, and when n is 2, the X radicals are not in the p-position to one another. If R1 is a substituted lower alkyl radical, the substituents can be e.g. B. cyano, halogen or hydroxyl radicals.
The esters have the same physiological effect as the free acids, but the esters can penetrate the plant skin while the ionic acids cannot.
The amic acid esters of the above formula have the property of regulating plant growth. The furamic acid esters delay plant growth. The maleamic acid esters and succinamic acid esters stimulate the germination and growth of certain seeds and are excellent herbicides when used after the seed has emerged.
The means for carrying out the process have an effective content of the compound of the formula and advantageously an inert carrier. The means can be used as emulsions, solutions in water or organic solvents, as wettable powders or as dry compositions. The effective amount of the active compound can vary, but the agents are usually effective when used in a dose equivalent to 0.45 to 1.81 kg of the active ingredient per 4050 m2. Production of Maleinanilidsäurealkylestern The Maleinanilidsäurealkylester can z.
B. by reacting the free acid with the corresponding alcohol in the presence of a dehydrating agent such as concentrated sulfuric acid or phosphorus pentoxide. The following compounds were obtained in this way:
EMI0002.0005
Other esters such as B. Propyl and butyl esters of N- (2-methyl-4-chlorophenyl) maleamic acid, both of which are crystalline solids, and B-chloroethyl and ß-bromoethyl esters of N- (2,4-dichlorophenyl) maleic acid , which are both viscous liquids, are also suitable for regulating plant growth within the scope of the invention.
The following examples show the herbicidal effectiveness of some compounds according to the invention in comparison with some known compounds. The evaluation of the phytotoxicity used in the examples can be taken from Table II.

The emulsions were applied to various crops in an amount of 0.9 kg / 4050 m2 and the phytotoxicity of the compounds was determined.
The results are summarized in Table III.
EMI0003.0002
As can be seen from the table, the ester according to the state of the art, methyl N- (2,5-dichlorophenyl) maleamic acid, has no phytotoxicity, while the new isomers are good herbicides. Example 3 Esters in the form of 0.2% kerosene solutions were also used in an amount of 0.45 kg / 4050 m2 and the following phytotoxicities were determined:
EMI0003.0007
EMI0003.0008
A concentrate of the test compounds consisted of 10% of the test compound, 10% Triton X-161 and 80% Espesol-5 (xylenes).
The concentrates were emulsified with water to produce emulsions having a concentration of 0.2% by weight of the test compounds. The emulsions were applied to various crops in an amount of 0.9 kg of the test compound per 4050 m2 and the phytotoxicities were determined. The results are summarized in Table V.
EMI0003.0011
As can be seen from Tables IV and V, the herbicidal activity is insufficient if the halogen atom is in the p-position to the amide group. The herbicidal activity is good, however, when the halogen atom is in the m- or o-position to the amide group.
Example 4 A concentrate of 10% N- (3,4-dichlorophenyl) maleamic acid ethyl ester, 10% Triton X-161 and 80% pent-oxol (glycol ether) was emulsified with water so that the Emulsion contained 0.2% by weight of the maleic acid ester. The emulsion was sprayed onto vessels containing cotton and sour grass seedlings. In the control vessels, the sourgrass grew lush and deprived the cotton of the food, the growth of which slowed down.
In the sprayed vessels all growth of the sour grass stopped, but it did not die off while the cotton bush grew and developed normally. Ethyl N- (3,4-dichlorophenyl) maleamide ester acts as an inhibitor or growth inhibitor only for sour grass, and this selective effect makes it the ideal control agent for sour grass in cotton fields.
Example 5 A wettable powder, consisting of equal parts of a mixture of 92% HiSil 233 (extremely fine hydrated silica pigment), 4% Marasperse N (lignosulfonate) and 4% Pluranic L 61 (condensation product made from polypropylene glycol and Ethylene oxide) and methyl N- (3,4-dichlorophenyl) maleamic acid were diluted with water to form an emulsion which contained 0.4% by weight of maleic acid.
Three plots with cotton seedlings were sprayed with the emulsion at a dosage of 1.81 kg / 4050 m2, and three equal plots were used for comparison. After about 10 days to 2 weeks after application, the sour grass only appeared in the comparative plots. Example 6 By replacing Espesol-5 with pent-oxol in the concentrate of Example 4, ethyl N- (3,4-dichlorophenyl) maleamic acid also inhibited the growth of ryegrass. To use Velsicol AR 50 G instead of Flent-Oxol of Example 4, the kai grass was completely destroyed.
Example 7 A 10% solution of N- (2,4-dichlorophenyl) maleamic acid methyl ester in paraffin oil (white oil) was dissolved in purified kerosene, so that the solution had a 0.2% concentration of maleamide - had acid. The solution was applied to vessels containing sour grass and cotton plants at a dose of 0.45 kg / 4050 m2. The sour grass was completely destroyed, while the cotton plants were practically undamaged. Example 8 N- (2,4-dichlorophenyl) -maleamic acid ethyl ester was prepared as in Example 2 and applied to vessels which contained wheat and wild oats. The wild oats withered and died while the wheat continued to thrive.
Wild oats are weeds in wheat, barley, sugar beets, peas and other crops. The ester is also non-toxic to beets.
Example R Aqueous acetone solutions of methyl N- (3,4-dichlorophenyl) maleamic acid and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (a standard herbicide) were applied to vessels containing pork thistle and green boar contained in an amount of 1.81 kg / 4050 m =. Pork thistles are a weed found in vegetable fields.
When sprayed with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, both the weeds and the green beans were destroyed, while the pork diodes died in the vessels sprayed with the maleamic acid and the green beans remained completely undisturbed.
Example 10 A composition (A) which contained 10% N- (2,4-dichlorophenyl) succinamic acid methyl ester, 10% Triton® 161 and 80% Velsicol AR 50 G suspended in a sufficient amount of water to form an aqueous emulsion which contained 0.2% of the succinamide acid ester. This emulsion was applied to a number of different plants at a dosage of 1.36 kg / 4050 m2.
A composition (B) which contains 10% N- (2,4-di-clilophenyl) -succinamic acid methyl ester, 10% Triton X-161, 10% Velsicol AR 50 G and 70% butyl carbol acetate was dissolved in sufficient amount of kerosene to form a solution containing 0.2% of the sucinamic acid ester. This solution was applied to various plants at a dosage of 0.68 kg / 4050 m2. The results are summarized in Table VI.

Experiments with N- (3,4-dichlorophenyl) -fumaramidic acid methyl ester showed that the compound reduced the growth of tomato plants to 1/10 of their normal size. N- (3,4-dichlorophenyl) -succinamic acid methyl ester and N- (3,4-dichlorophenyl) -maleinamic acid methyl ester stimulated the nucleation and growth of kayfish and beet seeds.
