<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Process for the preparation of an acrylonitrile copolymer

or contains 1-8 carbon atoms, saturated, aliphatic, monohydric alcohol.
British Patent No. 826455 relates to a process for the preparation of a stable, aqueous dispersion of an acrylonitrile copolymer which contains more than 1.50/0 of an α-olefinic monocarboxylic acid and more than 15% of an ester of such an acid with a 1-12 Contains monohydric alcohol containing carbon atoms by neutralization with ammonium hydroxide.
However, the resulting terpolymers are unsuitable for the production of fibers, both because of their higher heat sensitivity, which makes the fibers unstable to boiling water and sticking to one another during aftertreatment, and because of the poor mechanical and thermal properties of the fibers obtained.
British patent specification no. 717511 mentions acrylonitrile copolymers which contain more than 2.20/0 of an ethylenically unsaturated α, ß-carboxylic acid. Fibers can be produced from these copolymers, but because of their unfavorable physical properties, heat sensitivity, solubility and vulnerability to numerous organic solvents, they require a crosslinking treatment at a higher temperature in a nitrogen atmosphere.
Surprisingly, it has now been found, and this is the subject of the invention, that an acrylonitrile copolymer which is well suited for the production of fibers with improved dyeability and contains polymerized cinnamic acid and other vinyl monomers can be obtained by copolymerization in an aqueous medium using redox catalysts if the Content of cinnamic acid or its derivatives according to the general formula
EMI2.1
in which R is a cyclic radical which is arbitrarily substituted on the nucleus, between 0.01 and 1.5 parts by weight, based on the monomers present.
The proportions of the starting materials are preferably matched to one another in such a way that a polymer is obtained which contains at least 85% acrylonitrile and the remainder, apart from cinnamic acid or one of its derivatives, consists of at least one copolymerizable vinyl monomer. Particularly advantageous effects are obtained when the proportions of the starting materials are coordinated so that a copolymer is obtained which contains at least 650/0 acrylonitrile and the remainder, apart from cinnamic acid or one of its derivatives, from a copolymerizable vinyl monomer, up to a content of 15 % and consists of a vinylidene chloride up to a content of 30 parts by weight.
Due to the presence of this copolymerizable organic carboxylic acid, in particular cinnamic acid (phenylacrylic acid) and p-methyl-cinnamic acid, not only the color and the softening point of the copolymer or the fibers made from it are changed in a favorable sense, but also the basic dyeability of the fibers is also improved in a completely unpredictable manner.
To evaluate the basic dyeability of the resulting polymers, the latter are mixed with a solution of 7 g / l of a typical basic dye, u. between Sevron Blue 2 G (Basic Blue 22 of the index color) colored at 1000 C while measuring the amount of fixed color.
Experience shows that this measure is closely related to the dyeability of the fibers produced.
This measurement was chosen instead of the measure of dyeability of the fibers because the latter is also subject to other variables, such as the distortion imparted to the fibers, any post-treatment of the fibers, heat treatments, etc. By measuring the dyeability of the polymer, a more precise, authoritative indication of the influence of the polymer structure on the dyeability is obtained, as is the case with e.g. B. in the lecture by CA Bewers and TM Guion at the hearing of the Fiber Society in West Point on October 13, 1961 with the title "Equilibrium Absorption Studies of Cationic Dyes on Experimental Acrylic Polymers" (Studies on the equilibrium absorption of cation dyes on experiment Acrylic polymers).
The promotion of dyeability attributable to cinnamic acid also occurs with any type of copolymer if, for the purpose of producing highly flame-resistant fibers, vinylidene chloride is copolymerized with acrylonitrile in addition to one or more vinyl compounds and cinnamic acid or its derivatives in sufficient quantities to give the fibers the desired flame resistance To give.
The presence of vinylidene chloride in acrylonitrile polymers or copolymers issued by the

The following illustrative examples relate to the production of various acrylonitrile copolymers by customary polymerization processes, the dyeability and initial color of the copolymers according to the invention and, for the sake of comparison, no acidic comonomers or other

Composed stream plus an additional amount of monomers with an acidic function used to increase the colorability.
The amount of water or monomer added is 2.3 l / h or 0.5 l / h. The resulting aqueous polymer suspension flows off through an overflow pipe, which is filtered off, washed with water, acetone and again with water in order to remove all foreign substances and unreacted monomers, after which it is dried in an oven at 800 ° C. for 12 hours. Under the polymerization ratios described, approximately 300 g / h of copolymers are obtained in which the acrylonitrile and vinyl acetate are copolymerized in a ratio of 94 parts of acrylonitrile to 6 parts of vinyl acetate.
The following was determined for the resulting copolymers:
Intrinsic molar viscosity (, q) in dimethylformamide, expressed in dl / g, from which the molecular weight M of the copolymers obtained according to the formula of Cleland and Stockmayer: (1}) = 2.33.10 '. Basic dyeability: Sevron blue fixed 2 G amount of dye from a 7 g / l solution.
Polymer Color: Measured by General Electric's Integrator Spectrophotometer.
The results obtained in the comparative tests on a copolymer free of acidic comonomers (Example 1), copolymers containing cinnamic acid copolymerized according to the invention (Examples 2-7) and copolymers containing other comonomers with an acidic function are shown in the table below:

The color measurements were carried out in accordance with the regulations of the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage, according to which the colors are expressed in numbers according to the degree of purity and gloss under the conditions of "Lighting Standard C". A light source that corresponds to a black body at a temperature of 62,000 K is used for the standard lighting mentioned.
The principle on which these measurements are based is to understand every color of any substance as a function of three variables, namely: 1.. Predominant wavelength, 2nd gloss and 3rd purity, each of which can be determined for itself. When using a
In the spatial coordinate system, any color can be represented as a point in the "solid body of color". (See also Encyclopaedia Britannica, Volume 6, pp. 53-54.) For the purposes of the invention, however, it is sufficient to limit the measurements to the determination of purity and gloss.
In color measurements, the degree of purity is a measure of the approximation of the hue to the neutral color (white - gray - black axis of the solid of the color). The gloss describes the approach of the test specimen as the reflectivity of the incident light to the white. All these polymers were spun from a solution in dimethylformamide under the same proportions, the resulting fibers exhibiting the following properties.

The advantages of using cinnamic acid or its derivatives should be readily apparent to the person skilled in the art. Namely, with the same dyeability, a copolymer with a molecular weight

the fiber properties due to the higher molecular weight and whiteness has a favorable effect. With a lower increase in the molecular weight or a higher acid content, the dyeability according to the invention can be increased up to approximately twice that of the comparative polymer. Finally, the comparison with other acidic monomers used earlier shows the superiority of the effect of cinnamic acid in increasing the colorability.
In summary, it can be seen from the above that cinnamic acid or its derivatives represent a new, extremely effective agent for favorably influencing the dyeability of acrylic polymers with extensive options.
