Begrenzungskurve, welche ihrem kleineren Durchmesser entspricht.

Rotary piston internal combustion engine
EMI1.1
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
self-shaped piston bodies 4, 4a, 4b, whose side facing away from the shaft has the shape of a flat circular or elliptical arc, but in the middle of the outer surface a groove 5 is provided, which extends from the middle on both sides approximately over a Quarter of the width is enough. Sealing strips 6 are inserted into corresponding grooves 7 at the two ends of the piston bodies in such a way that they are approximately radial to the shaft 1. The bottom of the groove is connected to the space outside the piston body through a fine bore 8 which leads to the outer surface of the piston body.
The entire orbit of the piston body with these sealing strips rests against an oval-cylindrical path 10 which forms the inner boundary of the housing 11. The housing 11 also has an outer jacket 12 and a cavity 13 which is filled with cooling liquid. On the oval running surface 10, which consists of two opposite circular arcs on the longer semiaxis and higher-order curves connecting these, the openings necessary for the operation of the motor are provided on the circumference. At opening 15 the combustion air enters the engine and 16 is the exhaust opening. This opening lies symmetrically on either side of one flat apex 17 of the oval
Limiting curve, which corresponds to its smaller diameter.
At the opposite flat apex 18, the fuel injection nozzle 19 and a piece of it a spark plug 20 is attached. The
Shaft 1 is mounted on the housing in the usual way by means of roller bearings21. The outer limiting surface 22 of the piston is curved in such a way that it lies completely against the curvature of the flat apex of the limiting curve when the associated pivot pin 3, 3a, 3b is located opposite this apex. If this piston continues to move, so that after a quarter turn the relevant
If the pin lies opposite one of the two apices 23 or 24, which correspond to the large diameter of the oval limiting curve, a crescent-shaped space 25 has formed between the outer surface 22 of the piston body and the inner surface 10, which has its maximum in this position.
As the rotation continues, this space 25 gradually decreases to almost zero when the piston body is again in the position opposite the apex 17 and 18. However, although the piston body clings to the curvature of the surface 20, there is still a gap between the piston body and the running surface 10, which is formed by the groove 5 in the center of the piston body on its outside.
The mode of action is as follows:
Assuming that the shaft 1 rotates clockwise, the space enclosed between the surface 22 of the piston 4 and the running surface 10 becomes gradually larger in the position shown, as a result of which the combustion air is sucked in through the intake opening 15. As the piston body 4 continues to rotate from the position opposite the apex 23 to the position in which the piston is located opposite the apex 18, the gap is reduced almost to zero and the air therein is therefore strongly compressed. In this position, which corresponds to the piston body 4a of the drawing, the fuel is injected and immediately ignited. The combustion gases can expand as the piston 4a continues to rotate and do the driving work.
When the position opposite the apex 24 is exceeded, the exhaust opening 16 gradually opens and the combustion gases can flow out through this opening.
With each revolution of the shaft 1, since there are three piston bodies which have the same mode of operation, a single cylinder is sucked in, compressed, expanded and exhausted three times.
It is clear that by arranging several such cylinders and groups of piston bodies on the shaft 1, a six-, nine- or twelve-fold cycle can just as well be achieved, so that the driving expansions take place at very short intervals and a completely uniform torque is achieved .
The sealing strips 6, which serve to seal the working spaces between the surfaces 10 and 22, are pressed against the running surface 10 by the pressure prevailing in this working space via the connecting channels 8, so that the permanent sealing is ensured.
