<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Friction wheel drive for pyrophoric lighters
The invention relates to friction wheel drives for pyrophoric lighters, in which a coupling element pivoted depending on the lighter lid is arranged coaxially to the axis of the friction wheel designed as a cup disk and is pressed by spring action against its front locking teeth. In a known lighter of this type, a friction wheel also designed as a cup disk is used, the locking teeth for the coupling element being provided at the bottom of the cavity. The resulting small radius of the toothing causes higher coupling forces and thus a higher stress on the teeth, so that an early wear of the teeth and occasionally ineffectiveness of the coupling cannot be avoided.
It has also been proposed to arrange the locking teeth on the inner surface of the pot-like friction wheel, in which the end of an arcuate expanding spring of the connecting element engages. Apart from the fact that, due to the unfavorable stress on the spring, fatigue fracture can occur after a short period of use, the friction wheel is only supported on one side and is therefore poorly supported. However, the loose fit of the friction wheel impairs its effectiveness and soon makes the lighter unusable.
The subject of the invention now forms a
EMI1.1
mounted friction wheel a, which, however, in contrast to the usual friction wheels, is not provided as a full disk, but in the manner of a cup disk with a cavityj. On the annular end face bordering the mouth opening of this cavity j, the friction wheel a carries the customary one-sided locking toothing h (FIG. 4).
A shell-shaped coupling element b, b ', b ", shaped correspondingly to the friction wheel a, is seated axially displaceably on the friction wheel axis g, the edge part of which is crimped at right angles approximately in the width of the toothed friction wheel face and has coupling teeth b" on the face side against the cylindrical element body b, which are completely adapted to the ratchet teeth h of the friction wheel a in terms of their shape and distribution.
So that the coupling element b, b ', b "takes part in the opening and closing movement of the lighter cover d, which is also pivotable about the friction wheel axis g, the flanged edge part of the coupling element is similar to the toothed segment c at the top of its bar b, which is accommodated in the lighter cover d and causes its movement 'widened, which is inside the ceiling of the
Lighter lid supports d. The outer diameter of the cylindrical element body b is now matched to the clear diameter of the friction wheel cavity j such that the coupling element b, b ', b "protruding into the latter does not lose its axial displaceability, but the friction wheel a has an additional support to maintain its central position offers and is supported hereby itself.
This is especially achieved if the axial length of the element body b is shorter than that of the friction wheel a, in which case the bearing points of these parts that are brought together are to be spaced apart from one another on the friction wheel axis g even when the element body b is completely pushed into the cavity j come and therefore bring about a double, therefore stable mounting of the friction wheel a and coupling element b, b ', b "in mutual cooperation. A compression spring s pushed onto the friction wheel axis g is supported on the one hand on the side wall of the lighter lid d and on the other hand on the bearing hub Bottom of the cylindrical element body b from
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
and therefore urges the coupling element b, b ',
b "with its clutch teeth b" constantly against the ratchet teeth h of the friction wheel a.
When the lighter lid d snaps open, the teeth b ″ of the coupling element b, b ′, b ″ claw with those of the friction wheel a, thereby taking it along and causing the spark. During the closing movement of the cover d, the coupling teeth b "slide with their backs over the friction wheel teeth h without any effect, the coupling element b, b ', b" being pushed back somewhat against the tension of the compression spring s. Since both the coupling teeth b "attack evenly along the circumference of the friction wheel, and the friction wheel a and coupling element b, b ', b" cannot corner due to their mounting, local abrasion or shearing of the friction wheel axis g is not to be feared.
In addition, there is almost no wear on the coupling teeth b ″, especially since the contact pressure to be produced by the compression spring s only needs to be very low.
It should also be noted that the coupling element with its cup-like element body b and laterally inclined coupling teeth b ″ can be pressed out of a piece of sheet metal.
