Armor plates made of tungsten-containing chromium-nickel-silicon steels.

Armor plates or protective shields, which are supposed to be bulletproof against infantry projectiles, were previously made from chrome-silicon steel, nickel-silicon steel or chrome-nickel-silicon steel. Steel alloys are also known which, in addition to small amounts of chromium of a maximum of 0.8%, also contain tungsten or tungsten and molybdenum and are intended to be used for protective shields.

The requirements for such armor plates, with which guns, machine guns, tanks, automobiles or railroad cars are armored, are constantly increasing. On the one hand, the aim is to keep the sheet metal lightweight, on the other hand, it should also withstand the increased penetration of modern infantry projectiles.

It has not been found that the best bullet safety is achieved if the known tungsten-containing chromium-nickel-silicon steels contain 0-5 to 3% tungsten in addition to a relatively high chromium content of over 0'8 to 3'5%. The addition of small amounts of molybdenum and vanadium up to 0'4%, individually or together, does not change the essence of the invention.

As particularly useful has z. B. had the following steel alloy: 0'35% C, 0-60% Mn, 2% Si,
 EMI1.1
a high hardness, but their full resistance only comes into play when they are hardened in a known manner and, if necessary, tempered.

Armor plates according to the invention can be kept much weaker than the previously used plates under the same shooting conditions. This is particularly important for armored vehicles, which are supposed to withstand modern hard core bullets, because it makes them lighter and more manoeuvrable.
