Production of rolls made of alloyed steels, with or without subsequent surface treatment, for cold rolling of metals, in particular steel and iron alloys.

The rolls currently used for cold rolling metals, in particular steel and iron alloys, are made from chrome rods, occasionally also from tungsten steels. These forged and hardened rollers are very hard; however, they still suffer from the disadvantages that the very high pressures occurring during rolling, the level of which is still being increased, produce impressions in the working path of the rolls and that they show a significant drop in hardness after a short period of operation. The aim of the present invention is to produce rollers which are free from these disadvantages.

According to the invention, this purpose is achieved in that the rollers are made from steel alloys which contain 0.25-1.2% carbon, 1-4% chromium, 0-5-5% nickel and, in addition to or instead of nickel, also have one Addition of 2-12% tungsten, up to 3% molybdenum, up to 5% vanadium and up to 3% silicon, individually or mixed. Such steel alloys are known per se; but it had not yet been recognized that their use for the production of the specified rollers would bring the advantages described above.

These rolls show no drop in hardness even at the highest rolling speeds occurring during operation and the resulting heating. They are especially able to withstand the stresses in question when they contain about 0-3% carbon, 3% chromium, 7% tungsten and 0-25% vanadium.

In the case of the rollers made from the specified steel alloys, it has proven to be advantageous to give the rollers a special treatment through which the upper
 EMI1.1
 Temperatures exist.
