Process for improving the magnetic properties, in particular the permeability of
Iron-silicon alloys.

So far, only iron-nickel alloys with about 40-80% nickel could be used for purposes where a maximum permeability of 20,000 and above is desired or necessary. According to the invention, it is now possible to give the iron-silicon alloys, which are considerably cheaper to produce because of the lack of nickel content, of such a high permeability that they are suitable for the aforementioned purposes. Although the literature occasionally mentions higher permeabilities of nickel-free types of iron, these are only samples obtained in a laboratory and processes that are too laborious and expensive for technical application.

It is known to subject iron-silicon alloys to cold deformation of, for example, 61%, then to carry out a brief annealing to partially eliminate the cold hardening and then to carry out normal annealing at around 800-925 ° C.

The subject of the invention is a technically useful method for improving the magnetic properties (especially the permeability) of iron-silicon alloys, the alloys being subjected to a strong cold deformation of at least 40% and a subsequent annealing and in which, according to the invention, annealing in a protective gas (preferably hydrogen) takes place at about 1000-1300 C.

The method according to the invention can e.g. B. be exercised in such a way that an iron-silicon alloy with about 0.5-5% silicon is annealed after a deformation amounting to 40% or more by cold rolling in a protective gas (preferably hydrogen). By this treatment it is
 EMI1.1
to achieve in larger quantities. In the case of higher silicon contents, rolling can take place at a slightly higher temperature (e.g. around 100 ° C.). However, intermediate annealing can also be carried out in order to achieve the required degree of overall deformation.

Should the iron-silicon alloys be used as strip material for the production of toroidal cores for magnetic purposes, e.g. B. are used by transducer rings, the unannealed strip is expediently wound into rings of the desired size in a known manner and then annealed in the protective gas. In order to prevent the individual turns of the tape from welding and sticking together, it is expedient to separate them in a known manner by a thin intermediate layer of clay, lime or a similar substance.

When producing sheet metal parts that are punched out of cold-rolled strip, either the strip or the parts made from it can be subjected to annealing in the protective gas.
