EMI1.1

EMI1.1
High-pressure mercury vapor lamps with a noble gas base and glow electrodes emit not only visible rays but also high levels of ultraviolet rays that can be used directly for therapeutic or photochemical purposes or converted into visible light by means of fluorescent material layers or glasses. Therefore, apart from quartz, glass which is transparent to ultraviolet light is often used for such lamps to produce the lamp vessel. However, the previously known glasses of this type do not simultaneously have all those properties which are required for the high pressure operation of mercury vapor lamps. For example, glasses that are highly permeable to ultraviolet age easily when exposed to short-wave ultraviolet rays.
In addition, such glasses usually do not have a sufficiently high softening point and insufficient chemical resistance to the action of the vapor of mercury and other metals added to the mercury, such as. B. cesium, cadmium or zinc. On the other hand, glasses with sufficiently high thermal resistance in the required wall thicknesses are not sufficiently ultraviolet-permeable.
In order to achieve a high ultraviolet yield while avoiding premature aging of the lamp vessel, according to the invention the lamp vessel consists of two directly adhering, that is to say fused to one another, glass layers of different thickness and different texture, and the like. between there is a relatively thin inner sight made of hard glass that absorbs short-wave ultraviolet radiation and has a high softening point - about 7000 C and more - and a much thicker outer layer made of a highly ultraviolet-permeable, but slightly aging glass with a low softening point - about 550 6000 C - application.
Glasses with the following composition can be used to create inner vision:

Resistance to ionized vapor of mercury or mixtures of mercury with other metals such as cesium, cadmium and zinc with a thin wall thickness of O'1-0'3 mm, well permeable to medium-wave and long-wave ultraviolet rays (280-400 mu),
while after shorter waves they have a rapidly increasing absorption capacity and therefore practically no longer let through short-wave rays.

thicker wall thicknesses of 0 # 7 mm and above highly ultraviolet permeable, u. between the long-wave as well as the medium-wave and short-wave spectral range.
In connection with the above-mentioned inner layer, however, premature aging of the glass of the outer layer does not occur, since the action of the inner layer intercepts the short-wave rays that are dangerous for the outer layer. Also, the outer layer cannot tan prematurely, because it is through the inner layer against the

Resilience.
In order to make the emerging ultraviolet radiation usable for lighting purposes, a layer of fluorescent material, for example a layer of zinc silicate or calcium tungstate, can be applied to the outer layer of the lamp vessel, as is already known. In a known manner, a special screen, for example in the form of a surrounding tube, can be placed in front of the lamp vessel, which screen is either covered with fluorescent substances or made from fluorescent glass.
Two-layer lamp vessels are known per se in low-pressure metal vapor discharge lamps, but the layers have so far always consisted of glasses with a different composition.
