Shielding device for the anodes to prevent backfires.
To prevent reignition, the anodes in metal vapor rectifiers must be protected from the direct impact of the queek silver particles carried along by the vapor stream. The most common devices either lengthen the arc path considerably or reduce its cross-section in an impermissible manner. As a result, however, the reignition safety is partially canceled. This is because re-ignition not only occurs when mercury particles reach the anode through the steam flow, their number also increases when the arc drop becomes too great.
If the drop rises above a certain limit, i. H. if the voltage gradient in the anode tube becomes too great, a partial flow enters the protective tube near the anode and exits again at the end. The cathodic partial discharges which form on the protective tube in the vicinity of the anode and which emit electrons can then also cause backfiring when the current changes from one anode to the other. For this reason it is important to find a design that takes both requirements into account.
According to the invention, this is achieved in that double or multi-turn, helically curved metal sheets are built into the anode protection tubes to guide the steam flow.
Such an arrangement is shown in Fig. 1 in a view in Fig. 2 in plan. a is the anode, s the anode protection tube, b a sheet metal wound as a double screw, which fills the tube with a twist of 1800.
3 and 4 show in elevation and floor plan two protective plates b and c which intersect at right angles and which form a four-thread screw surface. In this way, the arc entering from below comes into contact with the surface of the screw and releases all the mercury particles it has taken with it before it hits the anode.
The arc path is only slightly extended. So it gets through this arrangement

effective protection against flashback achieved.
