Description

Lässt man z.

Process for the saccharification of cellulose-containing material.

A process for converting polysaccharides or substances containing them is known in which they are treated with highly concentrated or anhydrous hydrofluoric acid in liquid or gaseous state without substantial addition of water at low temperatures until the conversion products obtained are practically in water even after the hydrofluoric acid has been removed are soluble.

It has now been found that this process is advantageously carried out in such a way that gaseous hydrogen fluoride in a mixture with inert gases is brought to act on the material to be treated.

If you let z. B. act on sawdust undiluted hydrogen fluoride in a gaseous state for the purpose of saccharification of wood, the sawdust shrinks quickly at the points where the hydrogen fluoride first reaches. Masses are formed that enclose unsugarged material and prevent further saccharification. If, on the other hand, a mixture of, for example, equal parts by volume of hydrogen fluoride and air is used, the hydrogen fluoride penetrates completely into the material to be saccharified before it shrinks. As a result, a considerably higher yield of water-soluble products is achieved.

When working according to the method mentioned in the introduction, it is therefore not necessary to evaporate, expediently, by heating to about 100 ° C. while passing over an inert gas stream, e.g. B. air, first to condense hydrogen fluoride vapors released from the converted material in order to use them for a new conversion process. Rather, the gas mixture obtained can act directly on fresh material, if necessary after cooling.

The hydrogen fluoride in the mixture is then almost completely absorbed by fresh wood and used with excellent success for saccharification.
