Auch aus Stahl hergestellte und in üblicher Weise oder im Einsatzverfahren gehärtete Zylinder sind für Brennkraftmaschinen deswegen wenig geeignet, weil insbesondere   ame   Gasgemische bei ihrer Verbrennung stark oxydierend wirken und dadurch der gehärteten Gleitfläche Kohlenstoff entziehen, so dass diese Fläche wieder zu weich wird, also nicht mehr widerstandsfähig bleibt. 



   Gemäss der Erfindung wird diesen Nachteilen dadurch abgeholfen, dass die   Lauffläche   der Zylinder aus nitrierbarem Stahl hergestellt und einer Nitrierhärtung unterzogen wird. Auf diese Weise hergestellte Zylinder behalten auf die Dauer ihre Härte bei, auch dann, wenn der Motor dauernd oder für längere Zeit mit armen Gasgemischen betrieben wird.
