Process for the direct chrome plating of phosphorus and high carbon cast iron.
The invention relates to a process for chrome-plating phosphorus-containing and high-carbon cast iron. Here, cast iron containing phosphorus is to be understood as iron which has a phosphorus content of 0.5% or more, and cast iron with a high carbon content is to be understood as iron which has a carbon content of 10 or more. The main thing is the chrome plating of heavily profiled objects.
The cast iron types mentioned are usually chrome-plated in such a way that an intermediate layer, e.g. B. a brass, copper or nickel intermediate layer was attached. Such an intermediate layer, however, is harmful when it comes to chrome plating of castings that are used to press, pour, blow or roll hot pulpy or liquid masses, as they can easily be removed as a result of the great heat it is exposed, alloyed with the base material or lifted from the base material by high pressure, so that the risk of
Separation of the chromium deposit from the cast metals.
It is more advantageous to place the chromium layer directly on the phosphorus-containing and high-carbon one
Apply cast iron. Since the chromium adheres extremely firmly to the base material, as it penetrates into the base material, castings directly connected to a chromium coating are well protected against any wear and tear from mechanical effects or from heat.
According to the invention, the cast iron containing phosphorus or high carbon content to be chrome-plated is exposed to the effect for a short time before the chrome-plating current is switched on
Exposed chromium solution bath without a current causing the formation of a chromium deposit to flow through it.
It has already been proposed to treat iron or steel objects to be chrome-plated in this way, but it has not yet been recognized that this method can be used with advantage to chrome-plate cast iron containing phosphorus or high carbon content.
The invention can be carried out in such a way that the cast iron to be chromed some
Minutes is hung in the chrome bath solution without current. This ensures that the chrome bath solution dissolves the oxide adhering to the surface as well as the carbon or phosphorus. A piece treated in this way presents no difficulties in depositing chromium when the current is switched on.
PATENT CLAIMS:
1. A method for the direct chrome plating of phosphorus and high carbon cast iron, characterized in that the chrome plating of the cast iron is effected prior to switching on
Current, the cast iron to be chrome-plated is exposed to the action of the chrome bath for a short time without a current flowing through it causing the formation of a chrome deposit.
