EMI1.1
The invention relates to a method for producing friction surfaces, in particular friction linings for friction clutches. in which very small contact areas, so-called point or line contacts, can occur. The procedure essentially consists in that

of pieces of the desired shape and size is brought.
The following is one embodiment, asbestos fiber is suitably treated fiv that it forms a loose, tangled or combed mass. to which a condensation product of phenol and formaldehyde or a similar condensation product is added in a small amount of alcohol.
The weight ratios can be, for example: 1 part by weight of the condensation product to 3 parts by weight of asbestos. The mass is mixed thoroughly and dried without the use of heat and then pressed into a block or plate, also without the use of heat. The pellet is then ground to an extremely fine powder by means of an emery disk or the like, which is then processed into an object of the desired shape and size by molding and pressing, whereupon the object is strongly heated in an oven or the like and thereby is cured while it is expediently still under pressure.
A suitable pressure is 150 atm. and a suitable temperature is about 185: 'C'. corresponding to a pressure of the saturated water vapor of about 10 atm. If a friction surface material with a uniformly low coefficient of friction is desired, graphite can be added to the powder after grinding.
Suitable mixing ratios of graphite and powder are z. B. 7-10% of the former. depending on the reduction in the coefficient of friction to be achieved.
The hardened product is in any case a solid, practically homogeneous body, which has a more even wear and a considerable mechanical strength as well as a constant even coefficient of friction, even in the case of line or point contact, on the surface in contact with it.
It has already been proposed to produce such friction surfaces as brake pads in such a way that shredded fibers such as asbestos and shredded synthetic resin are mixed with one another, if necessary with the addition of graphite or the like as a lubricant, and from this by pressure with the aid of heat desired body. However, the material obtained in this way did not have the low and perfectly uniform coefficient of friction required for many purposes, with very small contact surfaces. The reason for this is that the threads or particles
