<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Device for approximately even illumination of a gap-shaped field.
The task of illuminating a long and narrow field as brightly and evenly as possible, which frequently occurs in physical experiments, has been attempted by imaging an illuminated slit-shaped aperture of appropriate dimensions or a thread-shaped light source using an optical system on the plane of the field , the longitudinal extent of the light source being arranged approximately perpendicular to the illuminating beam path. With this type of illumination, the uniformity of the surface brightness of the field depends to a large extent on the depth of the light source, and light sources with a relatively large depth are unsuitable from the outset.
Recently, however, there are often only incandescent lamps with helically wound filament available as light sources, when using them one would have to do without a sharp image of the light source and sharp delimitation of the field in order to disadvantage the brightness of the field lighting.
The invention consists in a device which allows a sufficiently uniformly bright illuminated field that is sharply delimited on the long sides to be achieved even with a spatial light source in the sense mentioned. This goal can be achieved by arranging the light source selected with its longitudinal axis approximately perpendicular to the illuminating beam path using a cylindrical and a spherical system with a collecting effect according to the invention in relation to the systems in such a way that the spherical system, taken by itself, is the light source approximately in the plane of the field and the cylindrical system in the main section perpendicular to the cylinder axis is approximately in the entrance pupil of the spherical system, the cylinder axis perpendicularly crossing the longitudinal axis of the light source.
By activating the cylindrical system, the image of the light source generated by the spherical system alone is only shifted insignificantly in the plane of the main section parallel to the cylinder axis, while every point of the light source is shown as a line in the main section plane perpendicular to it, with the various linear ones Cover pictures, and so the structure of the light source in your picture disappears. The long sides of the illuminated field are sharp if the arrangement is made in such a way that when the cylindrical system is switched on, the image of the light source in the plane of the main section parallel to the cylinder axis is shifted straight into the plane of the field.
With regard to the greatest possible surface brightness of the illuminated field with a given light source, it is advisable to choose the size of the cylindrical system so that the connecting lines of any point of the light source intersect with any point on the edge of the entrance pupil all refractive surfaces of the cylindrical system and that the The image of the light source generated by this system in the main section perpendicular to the cylinder axis has at least the size of the diameter of the entrance pupil of the spherical system.
The image of the light source, which appears approximately in the plane of the entrance pupil of the spherical system, must cover the diameter of the entrance pupil and the cross-section of the cylinder lens in the main section parallel to the cylinder axis must be so large that its edges when viewed from the light source Do not shade the entrance pupil. The width of the illuminated slit-shaped field, i.e. the length of its short sides, then roughly equals the width of the image of the light source created by the spherical system alone. The surface brightness of the field is uniform over a large part of the length of the field and only falls off towards the two ends, because there are the lines of luminous points
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
no longer cover them in their entire length.
The useful length of the field without noticeable
The decrease in brightness depends on the size and position of the image which the spherical system creates from the effective opening of the cylindrical system.
In the drawing, a simple embodiment of the invention is shown schematically.
1 shows the main sectional plane parallel to the cylinder axis, FIG. 2 the one perpendicular thereto
Main cutting plane guided center cut.
The light source of the example is intended to be an incandescent lamp, the filament of which is helically wound and denoted by a. The end points a1 and a2 of this filament a are imaged in the section of FIG. 2 by a converging cylinder lens b on the edge of a spherical converging lens c at points cl and e2. The converging lens c images the end points of the diameter bl, b2 of the cylindrical lens b located in the sectional plane at the points and b4. The one to be illuminated
Field whose plane is arranged perpendicular to the plane of the drawing is denoted by d.
The focal length and the position of the converging lens c are selected so that the diameter a3, a4 of the light source a in the plane of FIG. 1 is imaged in this section by the lens c only in the vicinity of the plane of the field d and this image as a result the switching on of the lens b is shifted so much that it just falls into the plane of the field d. The image of the diameter <, a4 der, designed by the lenses b and c
Light source a in the section shown in Figure 1 is denoted by a6; it determines the width
EMI2.1
as the area on which all the imaging rays brischel -brischel emanating from the individual points of the light source.
If, as a result of a suitable choice of the focal length of the cylindrical lens b, the image points b3 and b4 fall into the plane of the field d, then the luminous field is also sharply delimited on its narrow sides. The size of the diameter of the cylindrical lens b in the section of FIG. 1 is chosen so that the connecting lines of any points of the light source a with the edge of the lens c are both refractive
Cut surfaces of this cylindrical lens b, so that when viewed from the light source a, there is no shadowing of the lens c by the lens b.
