<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Device for supplying the secondary air equipped with an adjustable valve
Internal combustion engines.
The invention relates to a device which has the purpose of supplying secondary air to the distribution pipe of the internal combustion engine between the carburetor and the inlet valves.
It is known that the supply of secondary air to the air-gasoline mixture between the carburetor and the cylinder has a very beneficial effect on the complete combustion of the mixture and enables fuel to be saved. The known devices for supplying secondary air do not make it possible to mix the secondary air with the gases flowing out of the carburetor in a satisfactory manner because the air ducts which lead from the outside into the distribution pipe are not appropriately arranged.
If you take a closer look at the speed of the gases in the distribution pipe, it becomes clear that the shape of the ducts mentioned is of great importance, because the inflowing air must produce the greatest possible vortex movement in the gases mentioned if the secondary air and the gases are perfectly mixed should be brought about.
According to the present invention, the channels are arranged in a device of the type mentioned above in such a way that the incoming secondary air mixes as well as possible with the gases in the distribution pipe.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing. Figure 1 is a view of the device attached to the manifold of an internal combustion engine; Fig. 2 is a view, partly in section, showing the arrangement of the channels.
In Fig. 1, 1 denotes a distribution pipe and 2 a carburetor of a suitable design. The individual parts of the carburetor are not specified because the invention does not include the carburetor.
Between the distribution pipe flange? and the carburetor flange 4, a flange 5 is arranged in a known manner, which continues on the side in a tube 6 which opens into the valve housing 7.
EMI1.1
The carburetor flange 4, the distribution pipe flange: and the flange 5 are held together by bolts and nuts 10 ', 10 ". Which pass through the holes. M in the corresponding flanges 3.
4 and 5 go through.
In Fig. 2 the arrangement according to the invention is shown; this can either be provided in a special flange 5, as shown in FIG. or the device can be attached to the carburetor flange or to the manifold flange. In addition to the two holes 10, a central hole 11 is also provided on the flange 5, the clear diameter of which corresponds to that of the distribution pipe. The flange 5 is further equipped with a tubular extension 6, the cavity 12 of which communicates with the hole 11 through channels.
According to the invention, these channels. arranged in such a way that two of the hole 11 open out approximately tangentially to its circumference, while the other channels are at suitable distances between the two mentioned channels. A valve housing 7 is attached to the pipe 6 with the aid of the M thread. The valve housing is provided with channels 15 in the base 14, which are in communication with the tube 6. It is closed at the top by the cover 16, which is held in place by a thread 17. The valve body is further with a circular insertion hole.
M and equipped with the following parts: a disc-shaped valve 19 with openings 20.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
which can come into register with the channels J5, and a spindle 8 which passes through a central hole in the cover 16 and is held in place by the spring M.
The valve spindle 8 can be rotated about its axis with the aid of the arm 9 which is fastened to the spindle by means of the screw 22. A stop 25 between the valve housing 7 and the tube 6 serves to limit the rotary movement of the arm 9.
If the motor is running and the arm 9 is adjusted by the wire 2.3 in such a way that the openings 20 in the valve 19 coincide with the channels 15 in the valve housing, an air flow is sucked through the channels 13 into the tube 6, which is in the Distribution pipe 11, as indicated by arrows 24, causes vortices. In this way, the secondary air is completely mixed with the gases and causes complete combustion in the engine.
The device can also be used to remove soot from the cylinders by injecting water vapor into the cylinders in a known manner while the engine is running.
This is done in such a way that while the machine is in motion, a rubber hose or the like is inserted into the hole 18 of the valve housing. The other end of this hose is placed in a water tank so that the water is drawn in through the valve and enters the distribution pipe through the channels 7J. The water is atomized and evaporated on the way into the cylinder and in the cylinder.
