Es ist, wie bereits erwähnt, nicht erforderlich, auf die Überzugsschichte des Gegenstandes noch einen solchen aus Reinaluminium oder einer Aluminiumlegierung aufzutragen, welcher häufig aus anderen Gründen nicht erwünscht sein wird. Es wurde beob- achtet-und gilt dies zumindest in jenen Fällen, in denen das Grundmaterial aus Eisen besteht-, dass der tiefgreifende Überzug eine Folge der grossen Affinität des Grundmetalls zu Kadmium ist ;

Process for coating objects with aluminum and aluminum alloys.
The invention relates to a method for coating objects, in particular metal objects, with aluminum and aluminum alloys, mainly for the purpose of eliminating the corrosion of such objects when exposed to higher temperatures.
It is known to provide iron, steel or similar metals with coatings of tin, zinc or a similar fusible metal as a preliminary stage for a subsequent coating of aluminum or aluminum alloys. After the first coating, the objects were immersed in a bath of molten aluminum or aluminum alloy and a second aluminum or aluminum alloy was thus applied to the base coating.
It has also already been proposed to bring about the penetration of the aluminum into the surface of the metal object and the alloy with the surface layer by heating the coated object to a high temperature after removing the treated objects from the molten bath.
According to the present invention, extensive penetration of the aluminum into the surface layers of the metal object is achieved in an easier and better manner.
If desired, a further coating, different from the surface of the metal object modified by the impregnation, can be applied. As a rule, however, no further advantage in terms of protection against corrosion and against the harmful effects of high temperatures is achieved by a special aluminum coating, since a coating produced according to the invention ensures equivalent protection, while the characteristic properties of the metal base remain essentially unchanged.
According to the invention, the object to be treated, which consists of metal or some other suitable material, is provided with a coating of cadmium and then treated with aluminum or an aluminum alloy. The thickness of the cadmium coating is kept as small as it is compatible with the requirement for a continuous coating. Electrolytic processes can be used to produce this coating. Depending on the intended purpose, the treatment with aluminum or aluminum alloys is different. Objects, especially those made of iron or steel, which are treated according to the invention, receive a deep coating of aluminum or an aluminum alloy, which alone is sufficient to remove the corrosion of the treated objects.
As already mentioned, it is not necessary to apply another layer of pure aluminum or an aluminum alloy to the coating layer of the object, which is often not desirable for other reasons. It has been observed - and this is true at least in those cases in which the basic material consists of iron - that the deep coating is a consequence of the great affinity of the basic metal for cadmium;
the temporary coating of cadmium therefore not only represents a surface layer, but largely one. layer reaching into the metal of the object.
