System for rectifying alternating current.
The invention relates to an installation for rectifying alternating current, and more particularly of such high voltage, using an electric discharge tube.
In the case of discharge tubes which are suitable for rectifying alternating current of high voltage, a back-ignition can be prevented by a sufficiently large distance between the cathode and anode or anodes. It can now happen that, taking this circumstance into account, the distance between the electrodes must be selected so large that the passage of current is difficult even in the desired direction. The object of the invention is to remedy this problem.
According to the invention, a system for rectifying alternating current now contains a gas-filled electrical discharge tube with a hot cathode, anode or anodes and one or more auxiliary electrodes for promoting ignition, the auxiliary electrode or auxiliary electrodes being connected to the anode via another discharge tube with rectifying properties Main discharge tube is connected.
This second discharge tube, hereinafter referred to as the auxiliary rectifier, is connected in such a way that the path from the cathode to an auxiliary electrode in the main discharge tube has the same direction as the path from cathode to anode in the auxiliary rectifier, so that the main discharge tube and auxiliary rectifier both in one direction , in the other direction, on the other hand, neither tube can pass through. As a result, the auxiliary electrodes of the main discharge tube assume potentials that can only be positive during the passage of current.
If current passes through the two discharge tubes, the auxiliary electrodes receive a positive potential, the size of which depends on the applied voltage and the resistance of the path that leads from the cathode of the main discharge tube via the auxiliary electrode and the auxiliary rectifier to the anode of the main discharge tube. If, on the other hand, there is no current through the main discharge tube, then the auxiliary rectifier is also blocked, so that the auxiliary electrodes cannot assume any potentials that could promote reignition of the main discharge tube.
The auxiliary rectifier is expediently connected in series with one or more resistors which limit the current in the circuit of the hoof straightener. Thus, there may be a resistance between each of the auxiliary electrodes and the cathode of the auxiliary rectifier.
In many cases, the effect of the auxiliary electrode can be improved by connecting a capacitor in parallel to the discharge path between the cathode and auxiliary electrode.
In the described system for rectifying alternating current, an electrical discharge tube with a hot cathode and gas filling can be used, in which the distance between the cathode and the anode or the anodes is so great that the occurrence of a flashback is practically prevented and in the promotion one or more auxiliary electrodes are attached to the ignition.
The invention is shown in the drawing. A discharge tube 1 has a cathode 2, an anode 3 and two auxiliary electrodes 4 and 5. The cathode is expediently coated with a substance that emits electrons so that it can emit enough electrons even with moderate heating.
The discharge tube is filled with gas, suitably with a noble gas under a pressure of z. B.
3 cm of mercury. The distance between the cathode and the anode is so great that even in its absence
