<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Dirt trap and manure protection device for motor vehicles.
In their previous embodiments, the manure traps of the motor vehicles are exposed to the risk of collapse and damage to such an extent that none of the known designs has proven to be viable when approaching the sidewalk.
The invention specifies an arrangement in which the manure catcher is always lifted in good time due to its complete mobility and elastic design and is brought into such a position that it cannot become trapped. The movement required for this is given to the manure collector the first time it hits the curb and it continues to take place through its own elasticity. On the one hand, the manure catcher can swing out parallel to the plane of the wheel against the direction of travel while lifting over the ground, on the other hand, around a horizontal axis parallel to the plane of the wheel; at the same time, the manure collector itself is capable of being compressed in the vertical direction with simultaneous deflection.
In the drawing, an embodiment of the invention is shown, u. zw. Fig. 1 shows the side view of a wheel with a movable manure collector, u. between. Articulated with one on its carrying device

a manure catcher with its special attachment, which enables the impacts to be utilized insofar as the fender flips up onto the curb or other obstacle. Fig. 4 shows the side view of part of the manure trap including its inner armature; FIG. A shows the section through another embodiment of the manure catcher, consisting of two interconnected individual parts e, FIG. 6 shows the side view of the same.
The manure catcher P has a rigid edge, which is mounted horizontally during installation, for example made of spring steel or a staiken bleeh strip. At right angles to this edge strip and riveted to it
EMI1.2
are covered with canvas and rubber. The manure catcher P is rotatable about the horizontal axis A, which is parallel to the plane of the wheel, and is mounted on the axis A by means of small swing arms a (FIG. 3). This allows the manure trap to be opened with the lower edge pointing outwards.
The bearings for axis A are at the end of short metal strips or brackets e.
The rotation of the manure catcher is limited by a ring b which is recessed on part of its circumference, in which the nose b ′ of the arm a engages and which is fastened on the longitudinal axis A. The strips Ci are useful, as shown in FIG. 3, designed as a resilient clamping layer and are around short pins a! rotatable, which are perpendicular to the plane of the wheel and sit at the lower end of the support arms D; these support arms are also rotatable at their upper support points.
The rectangle d, d, d ', cl' with hinged sides, one of which forms the rigid axis vl and has the fixed corner points d ', d', now allows this axis and the manure catcher attached to it to swing out against the direction of travel simultaneous lifting when it hits a curb.
The mud guard can be attached to the vehicle frame or to the wheel axle cap. In the case of the front wheels, the adjustment must be made when steering. Figures 1 and 2 show the suspension for a front wheel; the bent parts D hang by means of the bolts d'on the part H, which ends at the top in a sleeve and with this is pushed onto the bolt II'of the part attached to the handlebar or to the brake housing.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The mudguard can also be hung behind the wheel; the arms D are fixed in this case and encompass the wheel above the axis in a horizontal position. The pins d serve for the articulated connection of the arms with small rods in place of the support pieces c, to which the clamp holders or bearings i are attached with pins (Fig. 4).
In FIGS. 5 and 6, another embodiment of the manure catcher is shown, in which the same consists of two parts 1, 2 which are connected to one another by small movable brackets o which are rotatably attached to each part by means of bolts i and '.
The mode of operation is essentially the same for the various embodiments and applications. By approaching the curb, the manure collector receives a push at its edge, which is inclined towards the ground; On the one hand, this causes a swing backwards, whereby the manure collector is raised so far that it is possible to slide up onto the curb. Swinging out is made possible by the four-bar linkage d, d, d ', (l' or, in the case of arms D, on the rods e, which then expediently allow the bolts d to slide in elongated holes to enable the manure catcher to be lifted.
In the embodiment according to FIGS. 5 and 6, the swinging out takes place by means of the short tabs o, which rotate around the bolts i and i. The lower edge of the manure catcher then slides onto the pavement while at the same time compressing the resilient inserts, which are slightly flexible and first of all allow a change in shape; since the swing arms a can be rotated upwards, the entire manure collector then folds outwards with simultaneous relaxation in that the lower edge gives way outwards and upwards. When the wheel is removed from the sidewalk, the manure collector falls back into its original position due to its own weight.
The movable devices of the mud flap allow the impact exerted by the obstacle to be used to activate an electrical alarm device - a bell, a light or the like, which is attached to the dashboard in front of the driver and shows him that the wheel is approaching an obstacle . In this case the lever arms a are used to close the alarm circuit.
