Process for the manufacture of bodies from metals with a high melting point.
The method concerns the production of bodies from refractory metals.
According to the parent patent, a single metal crystal is heated in an atmosphere containing a volatile and dissociable compound of the same metal to such a temperature that the mentioned compound dissociates and the metal released is deposited on the crystal in such a way that it grows into a single, larger ductile crystal.
The invention aims to improve this method. Maintaining and maintaining a sufficiently high vacuum requires a lot of time and effort and working in an insufficiently closed reaction vessel has the consequence that the wires become brittle and are then unsuitable for further processing. In addition, the vapor pressure of the volatile compound is not constant, so that it is difficult to prepare the metal single crystals to a predetermined strength.
According to the invention, ductile bodies are produced from metals with a high melting point, a single metal crystal being heated in an atmosphere containing a volatile and dissociable compound of this metal to a temperature at which the compound dissociates and the metal released on the crystal in this way that this grows as a single ductile crystal, as in the parent patent, but the atmosphere contains nitrogen apart from the volatile metal compound. It is advisable to run a stream of nitrogen along the heated metal crystal.
The following advantages are associated with the method according to the invention:
Since working with a high vacuum has become superfluous, the associated difficulties have been eliminated. The pressure can be kept at one atmosphere and therefore remains constant; As a result, when a certain current is applied, the same wire weight is always obtained, while almost no wires fail due to brittleness.
In the drawing, FIG. 1 shows an apparatus in which the method according to the invention can be carried out with advantage, while FIG. 2 is an individual representation of the apparatus by means of which the single metal crystal is fixed in the apparatus.
A long, horizontally arranged tube 1 has in the middle a side tube which is provided with a ball 2 in which tungsten hexachloride is located.
The inlet is located at the top of ball 2. 3 for pure nitrogen, which sweeps over the tungsten hexachloride. The gas flow divides evenly in the tube 1 to both sides and escapes at the two ends 4 and 5 of the tube 1 in order to be discharged through the tube 6.
The tungsten hexaebloride is kept at a constant temperature by a salt mixture of potassium nitrate and sodium nitrate, which is not specified in the figure.
One end of the tube is provided with a ground-in plug 7 with two tungsten-gold wires 8 and 9, to which the single-crystal tungsten wires are attached. A long glass rod 11 is also attached to the stopper and coincides with the axis of the device and at the other end

Joint 13 attached to which the wires are attached by means of eyelets 15 that are electrically connected to one another. The joint and weight are used to keep the wire taut, as it expands when heated.
When the single crystal wires between the eyelets 15 and the tungsten wires 8 and 8 are unclamped, a current is passed through the wires by means of the power supply wires 16 and 17, while at the same time a nitrogen stream charged with tungsten hexachloride passes through the tube 1, whereby the single crystal wires grow further until they have reached the desired strength.
