Description

Process for producing unalloyed or alloyed sintered steel bodies with a
Carbon content from 0.4 to 0.9%
 EMI1.1

The result of this measure is a significant improvement in the machinability of the sintered body by cutting tools such as drills, milling cutters or the like. The mechanical properties of the body change in such a way that the elongation is increased, u. between about 100%, while the strength is reduced by about 5 to 10%, compared with those bodies which have been produced without applying the final heat treatment. It is essential that these improved mechanical properties are achieved uniformly for an entire powder batch and, with the powder composition remaining the same, can be maintained easily and repeatedly for further batches.

It is also common practice to carry out what is known as double sintering in the production of sintered steel bodies. This consists in the fact that the body formed by pressing in the cold is pre-sintered at 700 to 1000 ° C. and then re-compacted by pressing in molding dies; After this second pressing, the final sintering is carried out at 1150 to 1300 C. These steel bodies also have the disadvantages that they are difficult to machine and that the uniformity of the mechanical properties leaves something to be desired. They can also be improved with regard to the machinability and the quality of the mechanical properties if the double sintering is followed by the heat treatment according to the invention.
