Process for the production of toluenesulfonyl chloride.
The subject matter of the invention relates to a process for the preparation of toluenesulfochloride. In the well-known processes, in which toluene is introduced into a chlorosulphonic acid that has previously been cooled to a low temperature, usually to about -7, the heat of reaction increases the temperature, but continued cooling prevents the working temperature from increasing to temperatures above 0 °.
In these known processes, a proportionate

tiond. Furthermore, despite the heat development which occurs when the toluene is introduced into the chlorosulfonic acid, an increase in temperature is prevented and the process is carried out at at least an approximately constant lower temperature, suitably around -70. On the basis of this finding, according to the invention, an increase in the cooling temperature of the chlorosulfonic acid due to the heat of reaction when the toluene is introduced is prevented by appropriate cooling or by reducing the feed rate of the toluene or both measures.
The method according to the invention is therefore carried out in such a way that the heat of reaction when the toluene is introduced into the cooled chlorosulfonic acid does not change the

The process according to the invention ensures that the yield is no longer dependent on the amount of chlorosulfonic acid, in that the same yield can be achieved when using approximately the theoretical amounts of chlorosulfonic acid than when using the excess of about 1: 4 which is customary in practice .
The process according to the invention therefore enables the production of toluenesulphonyl chloride to be made considerably cheaper by making it possible to work with considerably lower amounts of chlorosulphonic acid than was previously the case.
Example: Toluene is added to chlorosulfonic acid, which is cooled to about -7, u. in such a way that the temperature of the reaction mass is maintained at -7Q during the reaction time, a ratio of 2% parts of chlorosulfonic acid to 1 part of toluene being maintained. The maintenance of the low temperature can be achieved by increasing the cooling effect during the reaction period, e.g. B. by more rapid passage of the coolant through the cooling apparatus, by increasing the amount of coolant and by reducing the feed rate of the toluene can be achieved.
