Process for the production of white vegetable glue by alkaline digestion of starch.

It is known to produce water-soluble vegetable glues from starch by means of alkali in the cold or heat, which are used with preference for gluing and for finishing because of their longevity, durability and convenience. It is also known that these alkaline starch digestions have a yellowish color tone or, after neutralization, a gray color tone, which prohibits their use for purposes in which the lack of a pure white color, such as white woven goods, is a problem.

As analytical investigations have shown, resin-like compounds are formed during the alkaline breakdown by secondary reactions, which cause a discoloration of the starch to a greater or lesser extent. The aim of the invention is to switch off the effect of these harmful substances in the state in which they are formed or to prevent their formation.

It has been found that a product which remains white is achieved by treating the starch mass, which has been made alkaline with alkali hydrate or alkali carbonate, in the heat with a small amount of sodium acetate.

Example: 15 potato starch slurried in 60 legs of water, after adding 4 kg of soda, are treated for 1% hours while stirring in the steam bath. About 1-1 kg of sodium acetate are then added and the mixture is heated further until the glue is sufficiently thick. It is then neutralized with acid in a known manner and the whole is brought to 100 kg with water and stirred while cold.
