<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Process for the production of vulcanized rubber.
EMI1.1
and, if desired, admixed with an accelerator; the mass is then vulcanized in the usual way.
As already mentioned, the zinc oxide added to the raw rubber according to the invention is characterized by its extremely small particle size of at most 0.15 microns before the previous one
From the best brands on the market. Of these, the best types of zinc oxide produced by American methods have an average part size of 0.38 to about 0.52 microns, the best types produced by French methods, 0.38 to 0.34 microns. The size determination was made according to the information from Henry Green in Journal of the Franklin Institute "of November 1921, pp. 637-666.
As soon as the particle size is less than 0-25 microns, ultraviolet light and Qiarz lenses must be used for the microphotographic measurement.
The acid content of the zinc oxide product to be determined does not exceed 0'05% and is usually 0-02 to 0-04%; But even those products with an acid content not exceeding 0.1% SO3 show accelerating properties.
The zinc oxide used in the new process is produced according to the process described in patent specification No. 98390, which consists in oxidizing a jet of zinc metal vapor with a jet of cold oxidizing gas (air), the amount of air being and
The guide, the amount of zinc vapor and the shape of the zinc jet can be selected so that there is a substantial excess of air.
Zinc oxide has hitherto been used mainly to increase the shelf life of rubber and to give rubber the best physical properties and, in particular, friction resistance.
In contrast, it has been established by numerous studies that the previously manufactured
Zinc oxide itself does not accelerate vulcanization, but even has an inhibiting effect in certain volume ratios. In contrast, the use of the new product according to the invention results in the very surprising fact that it is a component of the rubber-sulfur
Zinc oxide mixture causes a very pronounced acceleration of vulcanization without the addition of any accelerator.
As could be expected from the surface properties of the zinc oxide according to the invention, the rubber compound offers greater resistance to the incorporation of the new zinc oxide than the old types, or in other words, compounds produced according to the invention remain stiffer when mixed. Therefore it takes more force to mix the zinc oxide into the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Rubber, and this excess force is then converted into a corresponding excess of heat, so that masses according to the invention heat up more during mixing than the masses previously processed.
In large quantities, as soon as more than 15 parts of the volume of zinc oxide are rolled into the rubber without softening agents, this stiffness and heating becomes so considerable that special precautionary measures must be taken. In a small mixing device with strong cooling, 22 Y2 parts of the volume of the new zinc oxide can be mixed into rubber about as quickly as lamp black. ss.
In those cases where the zinc oxide content is so great as to cause difficulties because of the toughness it causes, three different types of treatment of the rubber compounds have been used with success. The first is to make an auxiliary approach of rubber and the new zinc oxide, which contains about two parts of zinc oxide for one part of rubber. This auxiliary batch is allowed to cool and can then be poured into an ordinary one without difficulty and only with the usual amount of emollient. Work into the approach. However, this method does not necessarily deliver the best results, since the auxiliary approach does not always deliver the same quality rubber as when the zinc oxide is added directly to the rubber.
According to the second method, a little organic acid, expediently stearic acid, is added in amounts of up to 3%. The increase in the acid content increases the wetting ability of the rubber for the zinc oxide in such a way that it is easier to mix; the surface energy between the zinc oxide and the rubber is reduced
EMI2.1
found that stearic acid of all so-called emollients is the least disadvantageous for friction resistance. The third type of treatment consists in adding some parts of the space as a softening agent to the types of zinc oxide hitherto used to reinforce rubber wounded.
If one uses 100 parts by weight (100 parts by weight) of rubber and 6 parts by weight of sulfur for every 22Y2 parts by weight (137 parts by weight) of the new zinc oxide, the usual organic ones produce the effect
EMI2.2
and the highest stiffness. This peculiar behavior of the organic accelerator, namely strengthening without accelerating, occurs only with masses whose sulfur content exceeds a certain limit. With 22% parts of the volume of the new zinc oxide, this limit is approximately between 5 and
EMI2.3
Accelerators also shorten the curing time.
