Abstract

The DNA constructs encode a polypeptide which when expressed results in the production of fatty acids that have anthelmintic activity. Transgenic plants that express such a polypeptide may exhibit greater resistance to parasitic nematodes of plants, particularly when expressed in vegetative tissues. Transgenic plants that express such a polypeptide can also be useful for non-pesticide industrial uses. Claim 1: A transgenic plant containing at least one DNA construction, said construction comprising: a) a nucleic acid encoding an effective polypeptide to catalyze the conversion of a substrate into a selected C16, C18 or C20 monounsaturated fatty acid. from the group consisting of: (i) XO- (O) C-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-C = C-CH2-C (R1) -C (R2) -CH2-R3 in the which X is H, CoA, glycerol, a monoglyceride, a diglyceride, ACP, methyl, Na +, phosphatidylcholine, or phosphatidylethanolamine, where both R1 and R2 are hydroxyl, one of R1 and R2 is hydroxyl and the other is H, or one of R1 and R2 is keto and the other is H, and where R3 is C2, C4, or C6 alkyl; and ii) XOC (O) -CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-C = C-CH2-C- (O) -C-CH2-R3 in which X is H, CoA, glycerol, a monoglyceride, a diglyceride, ACP, methyl, Na +, phosphatidylcholine, or phosphatidylethanolamine, and where R3 is C2, C4, or C6 alkyl; and (b) a regulatory element linked functionally to said nucleic acid encoding said polypeptide, wherein said regulatory element confers expression in a vegetative tissue of said plant. Claim 115: The plant of claim 114, wherein said hydroxylated fatty acid is ricinileic acid. Claim 117: The plant of claim 116, wherein said epoxidized fatty acid is vernolic acid.
