- US Pat. Nos. 2,899,886, US 2,968,560, US 3,403,617 and US 3,607,297 disclose devices in which the capsule is initially perforated in a plurality of locations and then passed through water under pressure.
- the capsule described in patent CH 605 293 or in patent EP 0 242 556 B1 comprises a membrane in its lower part. Water under pressure is initially introduced into the upper part of the capsule, which causes swelling of the capsule, mainly at the level of the membrane. From a certain pressure, the membrane tears, thus allowing the flow of a water-coffee mixture.
- Liquid may therefore flow out of the machine and / or mix with the liquid having passed through the interior of the capsule. In the latter case, the quality of the coffee is diminished.
- One of the objectives of the present invention is to improve the circulation of the liquid through the capsule.
- the invention aims to prevent liquid from flowing along the side wall of the capsule.
- extra thickness it should be understood that the element concerned, namely the upper face, the side wall or flange has a portion whose thickness is greater than the thickness which constitutes the other part of the element concerned. It should be noted, however, that this increase in thickness does not result from a fold (double layer) of the side wall.

- the element concerned namely the upper face, the side wall or the rim, comprises a part whose thickness is less than the thickness which constitutes the other part of the element concerned.
- the presence of an extra thickness is to improve the seal while the presence of a sub-thickness is to weaken the element concerned, for example to facilitate its drilling.
- the seal between the rim and the lower part of the capsule cage is improved by the softening of the material which constitutes the capsule. Indeed, when water flows on the outer face of the wall of the capsule and contacts the rim, the latter softens. The capsule cage can thus sink deeper into the thickness of the rim. Sealing at this location is improved.
- the capsule comprises a gutter which is intended to be deformed at least partially by the cage during closure of the device.

- the upper face of the flange 6 forms an angle less than 90 ° with the side wall, which has the effect of facilitating the penetration of the capsule housing into the flange 6.
- the plate illustrated in Figures 9 and 10 is made movable while the perforation elements 1 1 are fixed. The movement of the plate occurs from a certain pressure that reigns in the capsule. Below this threshold pressure, the plate is retained by an element, e.g. ex. calibrated spring blade.
- the lower edge of the capsule cage illustrated in Figures 16 and 17 has a crenellated relief which is intended to increase the contact area with the rim of the capsule and to facilitate the penetration of the cage into the rim. The sealing at this level is therefore improved.
- Figures 19 to 32 show various embodiments of overthickness and under thickness which are arranged on the rim. Note in particular some examples (see Figures 23,25,29,30) which have recesses on the side of the underside of the flange. These can for example be used as housings for the insertion of elements which form the base of the capsule such as rings or rigid disks. The provision of troughs at the rim may also serve to increase its flexibility.
- FIG. 1a shows a capsule 1a according to a first embodiment of the invention after closure of the cage 4a, but prior to the entry of hot water.
- FIG. 2a illustrates the hot water inlet 7a, mainly in the capsule 1a, but also in the space 6a which is situated between the external face of the lateral wall 2a of the capsule and the internal face of the cage 4a .

- the flange 3a is formed at least partially of a material which is softens when brought into contact with a liquid.
- the softening temperature of said material is greater than the ambient temperature.
- the capsule illustrated in Figures 4a to 6a differs from the capsule of Figures 1 to 3a only in that the base of the side wall 2a forms an inclined annular zone 9a and on the latter is disposed a bead 8a.
- the bead 8a is sized to reduce (and not eliminate) the section of the passage through which the liquid flows.
- the bead 8a does not therefore constitute a seal but rather a baffle which has the effect of slowing down the amount of liquid that comes into contact with the rim 3a. It has indeed been found that surprisingly, the slowing of the amount of liquid contacting the rim 3a improves the seal between the capsule cage 4a and the rim 3a.
