H \L/WW zfcf di7 f7 7 I M U NITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JULIUS HERRIET, on NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR To DAvIn WOLFE BRUCE, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR CAPITALS. POINTS. FIGURES OF A FONT 0F PRINTING-TYPES.
Specification forming part of Design N 0. 9,608, dated October 31, 1876; application filed October 2, 1876. [Term of Patent 14 years.]
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, JULIUS HERRIET, of the city and county of New York, and State of'New York, have originated and designed a new Design or Pattern for Capitals, Points, and Figures for a Font of Ornamental Printing-Types, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my design is clearly shown in the accompanying typographic impression, to which reference is made, and consists in capitals, points, and figures formed of lines representing portions of bent sticks or twigs cylindrical in shape, and varying in size or diameter as occasion requires to aid in preserving the weight or thickness of certain b0dy-' marks.
Each character is shaded by lines of light weight upon the left side and top or upper portions, and-by a heavy line on the right and below, all being in and part of the body-marks, and having the appearance of following the shape of the body-marks from one extremity to the other. Where one part or portion of a body-mark overlaps or lies upon or behind another, a further efiect of shadow is produced by lines enlarged or deepened in weight upon the underneath-or partially-hidden portion.
The design differs from all others in the shape of the seeming twigs composing its lines; the manner in which they are represented as being bent or twisted; their absence of anything like knots or other protruding portionsv or representations of spots from which such had apparently been removed; the direction, weight, and character of the shadinglines; and the size and weight of the charac ters as compared with their width or thickness.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The design or pattern for capitals, points, and figures for a font of ornamental printingtypes, as shown and described.
. JULIUS HERRIET.
