Description

JAMES L. BRIERLY, or AUBURN, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 78,047, dated May v19, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN PIPE-WRENCH AND GUTTR.
@te Segnale ment it in time @tetten rteut mit uniting gaat nt tige smut.
TO` ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I JAMES LL. BRIERLY, of Auburn, in the county of Worcester, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new an d li mproved Combined PipelWrench and Cutter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled inthe. art to make and use the same, reference being had to -the'accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a side view, partly in section, of my improved pipe-cutter.
Figure 2 is a detail side view of my improved pipe-wrench. i
Figure 3 is a detail back view of the pipe-cutter.
Figure 4 is a detail front view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new device for clamping and cutting pipe, and consists in the arrangement and combination with each other of a screw-rod, nut, head-cutter, and clamp. The 'od is :screwed into the nut, to which the head is pivoted, the head being bent like a hook. To the end of the screw-rod, which is between the nut and the hook, can be fastened either the `clamp or the cutter. Ilibe clamp isY a. bleekL with concave, conical, or other suitably-shaped end, and between itand the hook a pipeof suitable diameter can be clamped. By means ot' the screw, thc distance between the clamp and t-he hook can beregulated, andthe deyice is consequently an adjustable pipe-wrench. i
The cutter consists of a disk with sharpened edge hung within a blockwhich is fastened tbthe end of the screw-rod, and which is guided by means o fa pin wit-hin a. slot in the clamp, so as not toturn .on the screw-rod. i
The pipe is clamped between the edge ofthe disk and the hook, and by then' turning the instrument around the pipe, the same will be eut by the disk. v
A, in the drawing, represents a rod having a screw-thread at endend, and a handle of suitable shape at theether. The screw is fitted through a nut, B, from which a lug, a, projects, to which a hook-shaped bar or plateA C, is pivoted, as is clearly shown in iig. 1.
To the end of the rod A can be swivelled a block, D, and fastened by means of a pin, b. The end of this block can be conical, as in iig. 2, or of any other suitable shape. j
By means of a spring, E, which is fastened to tbe lug a, the hook can bethrown towards the rod A, as shown.`
The pipe tobe clamped is held between the block D and the hookvC, in the manner indicated in tig. 2, and, by turning the rod A, the. device can be adapted to a pipe of suitable size.l
'.lo convert the device into a pipe-cutter, the bleek D is removed,`l'and another block, l", is fastened, by means ot' thepin to the end ofthe rod A. The blockiF has a pin, c, which fits through a slot in the plate C, as shown in figs. 1 and if, or is otherwise prevented from turning on the rod A. From the end oif the block F project two cars d cl, in which the bearings for a rotary cutting-disk, G, are arranged.f Thepipe to be cutis clamped between the cutter G and the hook C, and 'is cut by turning the device around it, and by screwing the cutter against the pipe. v
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent- 1. lhe'slotte'd hook C, when pivoted to the lug a, formed upon the side of thc nut B, and heldagainst the pipe by means of the spring Epressing against its back, and secured at oneend to the end of the lug a, all constructed, arranged, and operating as described, for the purpose specified.
2. 'lhe cutter-bleek F, when provided with the lateral pine, fitting through the slot in theV spring-hook C, whereby the cutter is guided and `prevented from turning upon ,the rod A, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
