UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN G. MILLS, OF WICHITA, KANSAS.
NOZZLE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 658,452, dated September 25, 1900.
Application filed December 2, 1899. Serial No. '73 8,995- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN G. MILLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nozzle-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in holders for garden-hose;'and its object, among other things, is to provide a holder of simple, durable, and economic construction within which the nozzle of the hose may be quickly and securely fastened and pointed in any desired direction.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a view showing my device in use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the holder with hose removed. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the head and stake, and Fig. tis a similar view of the bolt.
Referring to said drawings by letters of reference, A is a stake formed of any suitable metal sharpened at one end, as at a, and provided with a shoulder or foot-rest 13 between the ends thereof. The upper end of the stake is preferably detachably secured by means of bolts or screws 0 to the stem D of thehead E. This head is cylindrical, as shown, and provided with a recess F, the inner end F of which is provided with a hole or passage G for the purpose hereinafter described. This head is formed of suitable material, and the stem D is preferably formed integral therewith.
The passage G is adapted to receive the threaded end H of a bolt H,the opposite end of which is formed into a hook I, as shown. The bolt H is provided at its threaded end H with a thumb-nut .I, adapted to bear against the inner end F of the recess of the head E.
In operation the stakeAmaybe forced into the ground at any desired angle by pressing the foot upon the shoulderB. The nozzle of the hose is then placed in the hook I of the bolt H and turned to any desired inclination. The thumb-screw J is then turned forward upon the bolt, drawing the hook inward and firmly binding the nozzle against the edge of the head E adjacent to the socket and holding the same in desired position.
While I have described the bolt H as provided with a hook I, I do not limit myself thereto for, if desired, an eye may be used instead of the hook with equal results. Nor do I necessarily form the head E and the stake A in separate pieces, as the same may be cast or otherwise formed in a single piece of metal.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; butI do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention-or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a nozzle-holder the combination of a stake, a head secured thereto and having a recess therein, a bolt slidably mounted in said head, a hook formed on said bolt and adapted to project into the socket, and means whereby a nozzle in said book may be clamped against the edge of the socket, substantially as described.
2. In a nozzle-holder the combination of a stake, a head detachably secured thereto and having a recess therein, a bolt slidably mounted in said head, a hook formed on said bolt and adapted to project into the socket, and a nut mounted upon said bolt and adapted to bear upon the end of the head, whereby a nozzle within said hook may be clamped against the edge of the socket, substantially as described.
3. The nozzle-holder having a head provided with a circular socket or recess, and a central or axial passage, and a pivot-bolt, adapted to embrace the nozzle and to provide for the adjustment of said nozzle, substantially as set forth.
4. The nozzle-holder comprising ahead provided with a circular socket or recess and a central or axial passage, and a pivot-bolt having a hooked terminal to embrace the nozzle and toprovide for the adjustment of said nozzle, substantially as described.
5. The nozzle-holder comprising a stake, a head connected thereto and having a circular recess or socket and a. central or axial passage, a hook-ended bolt adapted to embrace the nozzle and a thumb or winged nut working upon said bolt and engaging the inner, end or :0 wall of said recess or, socket, substantially as described;'
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
