OLIVER BOND, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
HANDLE FOR SCREW-DRIVERS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,619', dated Junev 22, 1858.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER BOND, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie, in the State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Antifriction Screw-Driver; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon. l
The nature of my invention relates to the combination of two ratchet ferrules, used on a handle made in two parts, one ferrule on each part, and locking in to each other the same being protected by a surrounding band ferrule, which is made fast to one ratchet ferrule and turns freely over the other as hereinafter set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to de scribe its construction and operation.
Figure I, is a plan of my screw-driver when all the part-s are put together ready for use. Fig. II, is a plan, the handle being separated so as to show each part distinctly.

A, (Fig. II,) lower half of the handle to `vliich the screw rod, g, the ratchet ferrule c, and driver J are l'irmly attached; B upper part of the handle which is grasped by the hand; C, ferrule with ratchet teeth. This is firmly fixed tothe handle A. D ferrule with ratchet teeth. This is firmly iiXed to the handle B; E, ferrule, which surrounds and protects the ratchet teeth of C and D. It is made fast to D and inclose the teeth of both and turns freely on C; f, screw rod. This is made fast to the handle A, and passes loosely into the handle B, so that the handle B will turn freely thereon. The nut z., screws on to the top of the rod within the handle B. When the nut is screwed on the two handles (A and B,) are held together, yet reserving suiicient freedom to B, so that the spring (g,) will unclutch the ratchet teeth, and allow B to turn freely on the rod g, spiral spring. This coils around the rod f, and has freedom to expand and c0ntract thereon, and has suliicient power to lift the handle B, and disengage the ratchet teeth from each other, when the pressure of the hand is released from the handle B.
When this screw-driver is used, the handle B, is held in the hand, the requisite amount of pressure to hold the driver upon the screw to turn the same, will clutch the ratchet teeth of C and D', until a full turn is given then the pressure is lessened so that the spiral spring will unclutch the teeth, and the handle B, is freely turned on the rod f, to take a new hold for another turn, and this can be done without producing a rubbing friction between the hand and handle.
In using the ordinary screw-drivers, the hand of the workman is liable to become blistered and made sore, by reason of the turning of the handle in the hand, and the consequent friction. My improvement wholly avoids this diiiiculty, and gives him a tool which he can use with greater ease and advantage.
I make no claim to ratchet wheels or cog gearing or spring, when used in connection with tool handles but I claim` The ratchet ferrules C and D, when attached to the handles A and B and used in combination, the same being protected by the surrounding band ferrule E, as herein set forth.
