Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
E. S. SCRIPTURE, OF NEV HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 19,954, dated April 13, 1858.
To all whom 'it may concern.:
Be it known that I, ELIPHALET S. SCRIP- TURE, of 'New'I-Iaven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Screw-Wrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a side sectional view of my improvement, Fig. 2 is an end or edge view of ditto.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two ligures.
This invention consists in. a novel means employed for operating or adjusting the movable head or jaw of the wrench as hereinafter shown, whereby said head or jaw may be quickly moved and firmly adjusted to the nut or other article to be turned or operated upon, the' implement being held and the head or aw operated with one hand onl r1Y0 enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents an ordinary wrench bar having-a handle B, attached to one end, and a stationary head C, attached to its opposite end. One edge of the bar A, is notched or serrated as shown at- (a).
D, is a sliding or movable head which is fitted on the bar A, and allowed to move freely thereon. This head D, is of the usual form, and an arm E, projects at right angles fromits face end, toward the handle B. In the inner side of the arm E, there is a recess in which a spring (o) is litted and secured. This spring bears against the bar A, and has a tendency to keep its lower end out from the bar A. To the opposite end of the head D, a hollow projection F, is attached, and in this projection the upper end of a rod G, is fitted, and secured therein by means of a head or boss (c) which projects over a shoulder (CZ) within the projection F, a pin (e) which passes transversely through the proj ection keeping the rod G, in proper position `within it. See Fig. 1.
On the rod G, near its upper end a screw thread (f) is formed. This screw thread works in a nut H, the inner side of which is notched or serrated corresponding with the notches on the bar A. The nut H, is connected with the outer end of the arm E, by bars (g) one at each side, said bars being connected to the nut and arm by means of pivots. The spring (ZJ) keeps the serrated or notched side of the nut H, engaged with the notched side of the wrench bar A, andy retains or holds the head D. The head D, may be moved on the bar A, by drawing outward from the bar A, the lower end of the rod G, thereby freeing the nut H, from the barV A. When the jaw D, is moved against the nut or other article to be turned it is snugly adjusted thereto by turning the rod G, the screw (f) of which presses the head with increased power against the article the nut H, remaining stationary and the bars (g) in consequence of being pivoted to the nut H, and arm E allowing the head D, to move or slide.
By this improvement it will be seen that the head D, may be quickly moved on the bar A, and at the same time snugly adjusted to the nut or article to be turned or acted upon the rod G, serving the double function of a lever and screw, and the nut H, serving the double function of a holding pawl and nut. It will also be seen that the implement maybe held and adjusted or applied to its work with one hand only.
I am aware that a wrench has been made having a screw thread cut upon the face of the shank, and a screw nut fitted into one side of the movable jaw, the arrangement being such that when the periphery of the screw nut is forced and held into Ycontact with the screw thread, by means of a cambutton, the movable jaw may be operated by turning the nut. I do not claim any device of this kind.
I am aware that a pawl H, and a serrated bar A, in connection with an arm F, provided with a spring have been previously used, and I therefore do not claim said parts; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A j The employment, within the pawl H, of a screw-rod G, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
ELIPHALET s. scRIPTURE.
