Definitions
- My invention consists in holding, releasing and adjusting the sliding j aw of wrenches by means of a set screw Operating in combination with said sliding jaw, and an inclined plane, which is recessed upon the upper side of the wrench shank or bar, and inclined at an angle sulicient to enable the set screw working in the sliding jaw when set down to, or comes in contact with the inclined plane surface, to hold the sliding ⁇ jaw firmly in any adjusted position desired for use in turning or wrenching, nuts, bolts, and similar articles.
- A is the shank or bar of the wrench.
- D is a recessed inclined plane formed upon the shank A, and being inclined at any angle suflicient to enable the set screw E, which operates in combination with the sliding jaw C, and inclined plane D in such a manner that when said set screw E is set down to, and in contact with the surface of the inclined plane D, to hold the sliding jaw C firmly in any adjusted position desired for use.
Description
E. RIPLEY'. f
WRENGL. v
No. 30,987. Patented Deo. 18, 1860.
Z ZZzerref.-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EZRA RIPLEY, OF rrROr, NEW YORK."
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,987, dated December 18, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA RIPLEY, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which* Figure l is a sectional view of the wrench, and F ig. 2 a perspective View of the same.
The same letters have reference to like parts in each of the figures.
My invention consists in holding, releasing and adjusting the sliding j aw of wrenches by means of a set screw Operating in combination with said sliding jaw, and an inclined plane, which is recessed upon the upper side of the wrench shank or bar, and inclined at an angle sulicient to enable the set screw working in the sliding jaw when set down to, or comes in contact with the inclined plane surface, to hold the sliding` jaw firmly in any adjusted position desired for use in turning or wrenching, nuts, bolts, and similar articles.
The description of my improved wrench is as follows, viz:
A is the shank or bar of the wrench.
B is the fixed jaw.
D is a recessed inclined plane formed upon the shank A, and being inclined at any angle suflicient to enable the set screw E, which operates in combination with the sliding jaw C, and inclined plane D in such a manner that when said set screw E is set down to, and in contact with the surface of the inclined plane D, to hold the sliding jaw C firmly in any adjusted position desired for use.
In describing my improved wrench, I wish to be understood, as laying no exclusive claim or any broad claim to an inclined plane on the wrench shank, or to any sliding` jaw with or without inclined planes, or to any key or catch having inclined planes adjusted to, and for holding a sliding jaw on an inclined plane in position for use, or any claim to a set screw, independent of its combination with other parts of a wrench, but
What I claim as my improvement and invention in wrenches, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The manner of adjusting, holding and releasing the sliding jaw C, by means of the set screw E, in combination with the sliding jaw C and inclined plane D, combined and Operating in the manner substantially, and for the purpose as herein described and shown.
EZRA RIPLEY. Witnesses:
L. STONE, J. J. SAVAGE.
