ATTACI-IING TOOLS TO HANDLES.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 19,606, dated March 9, 1858.

T0 all whom t may concern w Be it known that I, JOHN HENN, of New l Britain, in the county o-f Hartford and State made square to fit into the handle H. This square part is cut away at the back side, so as to form a recess, a, with the knife or tool part, and which fits against the spring S, in the handle, and upon t-he top of said handle thereby giving the knife or tool a firm bearing when fixed in the handle.

n, is a. slit, running diagonally from the front side of the square part, downward, and finishing toward the middle of said square part in a circular opening corresponding with a pin, 79, securely fastened in the handle H. In the back part of the handle H a spring S, is fitted capable of turning near its middle upon a pin, m. The upper end of this spring S is provided with a small nose, d, and corresponds otherwise exactly with the recess, a. On the lower end of the handle, H, a plate, fw, is attached, 'on the inner side of which a projection or cam D is fixed, turning eccentrically upon a pin, g, so as to press against the spring, S, and hold the same fast, when the plate, fw, is closed, and to relieve said spring, and allow the same to turn on the pin, m, for the purpose of taking out or putting in a knife or tool into the handle H.

When the plate, fw, is opened, as represented in Fig. II, and the spring, S, turned back, any one of the knives 0r tools can be attached to the handle by hanging the same on the pin, p, passed through the slit, n., after which the plate, fw, will be closed whereby the projection D acts against the lower end of the spring, S, forcing the upper end inward and thereby locking the knife or tool firmly in its place.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters. Patent is:

The arrangement and construction ofthe plate, fw, with projection, D, acting against a spring in the back o-f a handle in such a manner, that when opened it will relieve said vspring to allow a knife or tool to be attached to the upper end of said handle, and" when closed, force the spring against the tool so as to hold the same perfectly steady in the handle substantially as described.
