Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
W. H. BUTLER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
L0 CK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,962, dated October 28, 1856.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BUTLER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Lock; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a vertical section of my improvement applied to a door, :20, m, Fig. 2, showing the plane of section. Fig. 2, is a transverse vertical section of ditto, y, y, Fig. 1, showing the plane of section. Fig. 3, is a detached view of the key.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to a new and improved lock which is designed to serve the purpose of either a lock or button.
A, represents the case of the lock which is constructed of metal and may be of semicircular form as shown clearly inFig. 1.
The inner plate a, of the case A, has a square opening made through it, said opening having plates 6, Z), at two of its sides, the plates projecting inward. A plate 0, is also attached to the inner side of the outer plate d, of the case the plate cl, being in line with one of the other sides of the openings. These three plates, together with the straight side of the case form a rectangular box.
B, represents a bolt which is of theusual form, the outer side being beveled. This bolt has a bar 6, attached to it, said bar being fitted and working in a guide f, attached to the inner side of the inner plate a, of the case A. The bolt B, has springs g, g, bearing against its inner side, said springs keeping the bolt beyond the edge of one side of the opening in the plate a.
C, represents a tumbler which has a slot lacut in its outer end. This tumbler is pivoted to a plate 2', which works on a pin j, attached to the plate a. D, is. a stop which is attached to the plate a, directly in front of the tumbler C. The bolt B, has a projection is, at one end which projection extends upward in frontof the plate 2'.
The plate '5, operates the bolt B, and the plate a, is pressed down so as to force back the bolt, by means of a key E, as shown in Fig. 3, said key having suitable bits at its ends, so that the slot 71., in the tumbler C, may be first brought in line with the stop D, and allow the plate 2', to be moved, the
.eration, viz: by simply forcing the key downward through a slot j, in the case A.
F represents adoor to which the lock is applied and G, represents the jamb or casing at one side of the door.
H, represents anarbor or pin which is driven or secured in the jamb or casing G. This arbor or pin has a recess is made in it circumferentially, and a recess 1, is made in one side of the pin or arbor, said recess facing the edge of the door. A recess m, is also made on the upper side of the arbor or pin H.
The case A, is fitted on the arbor or pin H, and when the circular portion of the case is upward, the bolt B, will catch into the recess Z, and the door is locked, one side of the case projecting over the edge of the door which opens outward.
The bolt B, is withdrawn from the recess Z, by forcing the key E, downward upon the tumbiler C, and plate 2', and the case A, is drawn outward til] the bolt B catches into the recess 70. The case A, may then be rotated on the arbor or pin and the door opened. By inverting the case A, so that its straight side is uppermost, and placing it upon the arbor or pin, the bolt B will catch into the recess m this recess is suificiently deep to retain the case in the arbor or pin and keep the door closed, but is not sufiiciently deep to require the aid of the key in removing the case from the arbor or pin. The case therefore may be used either as a lock or as a button.
I do not confine myself to any precise arrangement of the bolt B, nor tumblers or other mechanism connected therewith, for theparts herein shown may be modified in various ways.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Placing the case .A, on an arbor or pin H, which is secured in the jamb or casing of thedoor, the parts being arranged as shown or in an equivalent way so that said case may be secured or locked on the arbor or pin a allowed to be detached therefrom Without the aid of a key, whereby the device may be used as a lock or as a button, as herein described.
WILLIAM H. BUTLER.
