본 발명은 일반적으로 멀티미디어 파일에 관한 것으로, 더욱 구체적으로는 멀티미디어 파일 내의 정보 인덱싱에 관한 것이다.
최근, 멀티미디어 파일의 재생은 평균 소비자 일상 생활의 한 통합된 부분이 되었다. 휴대 전화, DVD 플레이어, 퍼스널 컴퓨터 및 휴대용 미디어 플레이어는 모두 다양한 멀티미디어 파일들을 재생할 수 있는 장치들의 예이다. 각각의 장치를 특정의 멀티미디어 포맷으로 개조할 수 있지만, 이들 장치들의 광범위한 도래는 상이한 장치 부류 및 카테고리 간에 소정 수준의 호환성을 필요로 한다. 마찬가지로, 모든 장치 카테고리의 적격성 및 사용 사례(use-case) 용도의 경우에도 모든 장치 카테고리에 걸쳐 유사하게 동작하는 것으로 생각되는 고속-감기, 되감기, 시작, 멈춤, 재생 및 휴지와 같은 소정의 특징들이 존재한다.

계층적 인덱스
본 발명의 실시양태에 따른 계층적 인덱스를 포함하는 멀티미디어 파일을 도 1에 도시하였다. 멀티미디어 파일(10)은 헤더 정보(12), 오디오/비디오 데이터(16) 중에서 상호 배치된 인덱스 정보(14) 및 3층의 계층적 인덱스를 포함한다. 상기 계층적 인덱스 중의 가장 거친 층(18)은 인덱스 정보의 단편들에 대한 적은 수의 조회를 포함한다. 중간 층(20) 및 가장 미세한 층(22)은 각각 인덱스 정보에 대한 연속적으로 큰 수의 조회를 포함한다.

비트 필드를 이용한 인덱스 정보의 표현

상기 두 개의 상대적 오프셋 값(41a), (41b)을 사용하여 표시된 인덱스 정보를 도 4에 도시하였다. 많은 실시양태에서, 각 프레임에 대한 데이터 유형은 전체 프레임 그룹에 대해 표시되거나, 또는 다르게는 프레임-바이-프레임(frame-by-frame) 기반으로 표시되며, 이 경우 "데이터 유형" 필드(35)가 상기 인덱스-구조에 부가된다. 전체 재현에서 프레임의 정확한 시간을 표시하는 시간코드 값(37)의 존재는 일련의 예비-결정된 규격을 통해 신호화될 수 있다. 예를 들면, 상기 시간코드 값은 모든 비디오 액세스 프레임에 필요할 수 있으며, 다르게는 상기 시간코드의 존재는 오디오 샘플에 대한 주기적 기반상 필수적일 수 있다. 다만, 상기 시간코드 값은 임의적으로 존재하고 대응하는 비트-플래그에 의해 표시됨을 주목해야한다.
일련의 예비-결정된 규칙을 통해, 상기 기술된 것과 유사한 구조가 본 발명의 실시양태에 따른 계층적 인덱싱을 표현하는 데 적용될 수 있다. 예를 들면, "1차 오프셋" 값(50)은, 인덱스의 정확한 타임스탬프를 나타내는 시간코드 값(52)과 함께 구체적인 인덱스 위치를 가리킬 수 있다. 추가적인 비트-필드(39)인 "서브인덱스"는 상기 "1차 오프셋"에 의해 지적된 위치로부터의 상대적인 오프셋을 가리킬 수 있다. 이러한 "서브인덱스" 위치(54)는 보다 큰 인덱스 클러스터의 개시시부터 정제된 것이다. 본 발명에 따른 계층적 인덱스를 구성하기 위한 다양한 값의 사용을 도 5에 나타내었다.
또한, 비트 필드 플래그 및 연관된 데이터 필드를 사용하여, 파일 내 특정 스트림에 대한 일련의 액세스 또는 키 프레임을 가리키는 감소된 인덱스 구조를 나타낼 수 있다. 본 발명의 한 실시양태에 따른 감소된 인덱스를 도 6에 나타내었다. 예시된 실시양태에서, "플래그" 필드(602) 이후, 대응하는 일련의 크기 바이트(604), "1차 오프셋" 값(606) 및 시간코드(608)가 존재한다. 상기 액세스 프레임은 전형적으로 파일 내의 비디오 프레임과 관련될 수 있지만, 다시 이러한 필드는 파일 내의 모든 스트림 유형에 대해 정의될 수 있다. 도 6에 도시된 구조(600)는 모든 액세스 또는 키-프레임의 위치를 저장하고, 파일 내 캡슐화된 트랙과 관련된 모든 오프셋의 위치를 포함할 수 있다.
가변 비트 필드 플래그의 사용은 계층적이고 감소된 통상의 인덱싱 기법에서 나타날 수 있는 다중 데이터 구조를 실현할 수 있게 함에 주목해야한다. 가변 길이 데이터를 나타내는 플래그로서의 비트 필드의 사용은, 모든 프레임이 일반적으로 구성원 모두를 필요로 하는 것이 아니기 때문에 전체 인덱스의 크기를 최적화하는 것을 보조할 수 있다.
이제 도 7을 참조하면, 본 발명의 한 실시양태에 따른 점진적인 재생 시스템이 도시되어 있다. 재생 시스템(190)은 네트워크(194)에 연결된 미디어 서버(192)를 포함한다. 미디어 파일은 미디어 서버(194) 상에 저장되고 클라이언트 애플리케이션으로 구성된 장치에 의해 접근 가능하다. 예시된 실시양태에서, 미디어 서버상의 미디어 파일에 액세스하는 장치는 퍼스널 컴퓨터(196), 소비자 가전 장치 예컨대 텔레비젼(200)과 같은 재생 장치에 연결된 셋톱 박스(18), 및 휴대 장치 예컨대 PDA(202) 또는 휴대폰 핸드셋을 포함한다. 상기 장치들 및 미디어 서버(192)는 게이트웨이(206)를 통해 인터넷(204)과 연결된 네트워크(194) 상에서 통신할 수 있다. 다른 실시양태에서, 미디어 서버(192) 및 상기 장치들은 인터넷상에서 통신한다.
상기 장치들은 미디어 서버(192)로부터 재생용 미디어 파일 부분을 요청할 수 있는 클라이언트 애플리케이션으로 구성된다. 상기 클라이언트 애플리케이션은 소프트웨어, 펌웨어, 하드웨어 또는 이들의 조합으로 구현될 수 있다. 많은 실시양태에서, 상기 장치는 다운로드된 미디어 파일로부터 미디어를 재생한다. 다수의 실시양태에서, 상기 장치는 또 다른 장치가 상기 미디어를 재생할 수 있도록 하는 하나 이상의 출력부를 제공한다. 상기 미디어 파일이 인덱스를 포함하는 경우, 본 발명의 한 실시양태에 따른 클라이언트 애플리케이션으로 구성된 장치는 상기 인덱스를 사용하여 상기 미디어의 다양한 부분들의 위치를 결정할 수 있다. 따라서, 상기 인덱스를 사용하여 사용자에게 "트릭 플레이" 기능을 제공할 수 있다. 사용자가 "트릭 플레이"를 지시한 경우, 상기 장치는 "트릭 플레이" 기능의 실행에 필요한 미디어 파일의 부분 또는 부분들을 결정하는 데 상기 인덱스를 사용하고 이들 부분들을 서버로부터 요청한다. 많은 실시양태에서, 상기 클라이언트 애플리케이션은 상기 미디어 파일 내의 특정 바이트 범위의 다운로드를 허용하는 운송 프로토콜을 사용하여 상기 미디어 파일 부분들을 요청한다. 하나의 이러한 프로토콜은 www.bittorrent.org로부터 입수가능한 더 인터넷 소사이어티 오어 비트토런트(The Internet Society or BitTorrent)에 의해 발표된 HTTP 1.1 프로토콜이다. 다른 실시양태에서는, 상기 미디어 서버로부터 특정 미디어 파일 부분들을 얻는 데 다른 프로토콜 및/또는 메카니즘을 사용할 수도 있다.
도 8 내지 11을 참조하면, 상기 인덱스 구조를 이용하는 과정의 한 실시양태가 도시되어 있다. 미디어 파일 예컨대 M 파일(120)은, 예를 들면 재생 장치 또는 특히 재생 장치의 재생 엔진으로부터의 멀티미디어 파일 요청에 기초하여 미디어 서버로부터 수신된다(111). 상기 요청된 미디어 파일을 위치시킨 후, 상기 미디어 서버는 상기 미디어 파일 시점에서의 모든 또는 일부 부분들을 상기 재생 장치에 전송한다. 상기 재생 장치는 한 실시양태에서 상기 전송된 미디어 파일을 디코딩하여 계층적 인덱스를 위치시킨다(112). 하나의 이러한 실시양태에서, 도 9를 참조하면, 상기 재생 장치는 상기 파일을 EBML(Extensible Binary Meta Language) 요소(128)로부터 출발하여 세그먼트 요소(129) 및 탐색 헤드(121)의 콘텐츠에 이송 또는 파싱(parsing)하여 계층적 인덱스(127)를 위치시킨다. 이와 같이, 세그먼트 정보(122), 트랙(123), 챕터(124), 클러스터(125) 및 큐(126)를, 이들 또한 파싱될 수 있지만, 우회하여 상기 계층적 인덱스를 빠르게 위치시킬 수 있다. 상기 위치된 인덱스는 이어서 메모리로 로딩된다(113). 상기 인덱스의 메모리로의 로딩은 액세스가 용이하여 원하는 팩킷(packet) 또는 프레임이 재생 장치에 의해 표시 또는 액세스될 수 있도록 한다.
상기 계층적 인덱스는, 많은 저 메모리 재생 장치 예컨대 저급 소비자 가전 장치가 전체 인덱스를 메모리에 저장하기에 너무 작아서 복잡한 캐싱(caching) 방식을 회피한다. 상기 인덱스가 너무 커서 메모리에 저장할 수 없거나 또는 일반적으로 더 알맞은 경우, 탐색 정확도의 손실은 전혀 일어나지 않는다. 상기 인덱스가 실제 탐색 포인트가 아닌 트랙 각각에 대해 정의된 탐색 포인트 또는 큐로의 LUT(lookup table) 또는 메커니즘인 경우, 상기 인덱스 부분의 제거 방식은 원하는 탐색 포인트에 대한 큐를 검색할 때 몇몇 추가적인 판독을 유발할 수 있다. 상기 재생 장치는 상기 전송된 미디어 파일의 비트 스트림 팩킷 또는 프레임에 접근하여 미디어 파일의 오디오, 비디오 및/또는 서브타이틀을 재생한다(114).
사용자 요청 예컨대 트릭-플레이 요청시, 상기 재생 장치는 로딩되거나 또는 캐싱된 계층적 인덱스를 검색하여 원하는 시간 또는 탐색 포인트와 같거나 그에 가장 근접하고 그에 선행하는 엔트리 또는 계층적 포인트를 확인한다(115). 한 실시양태에서, 특정의 계층적 포인트는, 재생되는 콘텐츠 및 사용자 요청의 표시 시간 또는 타임스탬프 예컨대 트릭-플레이 기능의 속도 및/또는 방향에 기초하여 위치된다. 예시된 도 10 내지 11의 경우에, 원하는 타임스탬프는 비트 스트림 내에서 610초이다.
도 10은 인덱스 시간 제로(계층적 인덱스 시간(131))로부터 시작하여 인덱스 시간(600)(계층적 인덱스 시간(132))까지 총 6개의 계층적 포인트(13)를 나타낸 것이며, 여기서 5개의 계층적 포인트는 다이어그램 상에 도시되어 있지 않다. 원하는 탐색 시간에 가장 근접한 계층적 포인트를 위치시킨 후(이 경우, 인덱스 시간은600), 인덱스 위치 또는 오프셋(134)을 트랙 위치(133)로부터 가져와 원하는 탐색 포인트를 포함하는 큐 부분을 위치시킨다(116). 상기 재생 장치는 위치된 큐 부분을 탐색하고(117), 상기 큐는, 원하는 시간 또는 탐색 포인트와 동일하거나 그에 가장 가깝고 그에 선행하는 엔트리가 위치되고 나서야 판독된다(118).
상기 위치된 큐를 이용하여, 상기 재생 장치는 오프셋 값을 되찾아 원하는 클러스트를 탐색하고 확인한다(119). 원하는 타임스탬프(예컨대, (610))로서 대응하는 타임스탬프를 갖는 원하는 클러스터 내의 블록을 위치시키고 디코딩하여 재생 장치에 의해 표시한다(120). 상기 과정은 사용자가 미디어 파일의 재생 중단을 요청할 때까지 계속된다.
이러한 개념은 도 11에 추가로 분류되어 있다. 계층적 인덱스 시간(600)은 도 10을 참조하여 앞서 기술한 바와 같이 계층적 인덱스 구조(127)로부터 확인된다. 이 특정 예에서, 큐 구조(151) 내의 인덱스 위치는 시간(610)(큐 시간(153))에 대응하는 특정 큐 포인트(152)에 접근하는 데 사용된다. 트랙 위치(154) 및 클러스터 위치(155)에서의 데이터를 통한 큐 포인트(152)는 일반적으로 수초 가치의 멀티미디어 데이터를 수용할 수 있는 클러스터 구조(160)를 가리킨다.

블록을 특정 시간에 따라 위치시키는 절차는, 대응하는 블록들 내의 모든 데이터가 동기화 방식으로 제공되도록, 멀티미디어 데이터의 다중 트랙을 위해 반복될 수 있다.

  1. 미디어 파일에 저장된 콘텐츠를 재생 장치에 의해 재생하는 방법으로서,
    복수의 미디어 프레임을 갖는 콘텐츠 데이터, 상기 복수의 프레임 중의 각각의 프레임과 연관된 큐 데이터 및 상기 큐 데이터의 서브세트와 연관된 계층적 인덱스(hierarchical index)를 구비하는 미디어 파일을 재생 장치에 제공하는 단계;
    상기 콘텐츠 데이터를 재생 장치에 의해 디코딩하는 단계;
    상기 디코딩된 콘텐츠 데이터로부터 표시 화면상에 콘텐츠를 표시하는 단계;
    사용자 요청을 수신하는 단계;
    상기 사용자 요청에 기초하여 상기 인덱스를 위치시키는 단계; 및
    상기 위치된 인덱스에 기초하여 상기 큐 데이터의 서브세트로부터 하나 이상의 미디어 프레임을 디코딩하는 단계를 포함하는, 미디어 파일의 콘텐츠의 재생방법.

    타임스탬프에 기초하여 상기 복수의 인덱스 데이터-포인트로부터 하나의 인덱스 데이터-포인트를 위치시키는 단계; 및

  20. 제18항에 있어서, 상기 표시된 프레임에 대해서 동기화 방식으로 서브타이틀을 표시하는 단계를 추가로 포함하며, 이때 상기 표시된 서브타이틀은 상기 표시된 프레임에 대한 서브타이틀 데이터에 대응하는 서브타이틀 정보에 기초한 것인, 멀티미디어 파일의 디코딩 방법.
  21. 제18항에 있어서, 상기 표시된 프레임에 대해 메타데이터(metadata) 정보를 추가로 표시하는 단계를 추가로 포함하며, 이때 상기 표시된 메타데이터는 상기 표시된 프레임에 대한 메타데이터에 대응하는 메타데이터 정보에 기초한 것인, 멀티미디어 파일의 디코딩 방법.
  22. 제17항에 있어서, 상기 위치된 큐 데이터-포인트에 의해 조회된 클러스터(cluster)를 위치시키는 단계를 추가로 포함하는, 멀티미디어 파일의 디코딩 방법.
  23. 제19항에 있어서, 상기 위치된 큐 데이터-포인트에 의해 조회된 상기 위치된 클러스터 내에 블록을 위치시키는 단계를 추가로 포함하는, 멀티미디어 파일의 디코딩 방법.
