Abstract

<PICT:0778803/IV(a)/1> Surfaces of polythene bodies, e.g. films, are subjected to an electrostatic discharge by interposing the body together with a glass insulating element between conductor electrodes at different potentials, of sufficient intensity to render the surface molecules of the polyethylene highly unsaturated, whereby the surface is rendered adherent to materials such as ink, pigments, bonding materials, flux and adhesives. The discharge, which may be accompanied by a corona discharge and may be produced by a Tesla coil or transformer at a voltage in excess of 10,000 volts by using an alternating current of at least 10 cycles per second, may be applied only to selected areas. The discharge may be from tubes, rods, screens or wires and in an example a conductive plate of aluminium foil 42, lying on a conductive coating 43 on a glass plate 44, is raised to a high voltage and placed over the body on a lower conducting plate or conveyer.
